This home page introduces you to my nonfiction book, entitled "The Tragedy of Hokutan Yubari Coal Mine in 1981," which was written by Eiichi Masutani and was published by Sairyusya Co. in Feb. 15, 1996.

In October 1981, Hokutan Yubari Coal Mine Co., located in Yubari in the Japan's most northern island of Hokkaido, had a sudden gas explosion and the ensuing fires some 800 meters deep, claiming the lives of 93 workers. After the incident, the coal mine operator was forced to go bankrupt, with 2,000 employees losing jobs at one time. However, the town's and prefecture's governments, the coal mining industry and the central government moved to maintain operations at the coal field by forging a new company to succeed the failed Hokutan firm. The most important task was to protect the local economy from total collapse.
