Tamiya is going to release the latest Toyota Celica in September. It's a curbside model, and expected to cost 1800 yen.

Tamiya 1/24 scale VW New Beetle kit is finished.

Nissan is said to be developing the next generation Z-car, and the prototype might appear in public as early as October at Tokyo Motor Show.  The California designed show car has nothing to do with this.  It will be smaller than the current 300ZX (Z32), and it will likely have a 3.0 liter straight six(!), a variation of the RB26, which is found in the Skyline GT-R.  I've got to start saving money now.

Tamiya's 1/20 scale McLaren Mercedes MP4/13 is available now.  It's the German GP version, and the grooved tires are nicely done.  MP4/13 Page

F1 Modeling Vol.3 is available now.  It's a Japanese book, which contains many reference photos and modeling tips, and vol. 3 features the McLaren Mercedes MP4/13 and some Ferraris such as 312, 189 and F310B.  The text is Japanese, and it has many close-up pictures to detail the Tamiya kits.  64 pages, 1300 yen.

Hobby Japan special issue Car Modeling Manual vol. 7 is available.  This issue is dedicated to the street cars featured in the comic book series and CG animation called "Initial D."  It also has beautifully scratchbuilt 1/12 McLaren Mercedes MP4/13 and Lamborghini Diablo GTR. ISBN 4-89425-204-X, 1800 yen.

May 1999
bulletI moved to a new apartment.  It has three small rooms in addition to the living room and kitchen.  It's spacious enough to accommodate a few hundred kits and many reference books. :)  My wife says, "Only in one room."

bulletHonda has released a sports car called, the S2000.  I took a close look at it, and I think the real car looks heck of a lot better than the photos, especially the sharp and pointy nose, and the headlight treatment.  The car sits low, and the front section is very long.  The cockpit is tight so that you can hold yourself against side g force, and the switches are very simple and easy to operate.  The pedals are located just right to make "heel and toe" easy.  The meters are digital, which is mimicking the modern Formula One cars, but personally, I prefer analog.

bulletTamiya is reissuing the following kits in June, and Modeler's is going to release photo-etch detail set for them.  Jaguar XJR9-LM, Sauber C9, Nissan R89C and Mazda 787B.
bulletTamiya is also reissuing a few F-1 kits, namely, Ferrari 312 T3, Ferrari 189 the early version in 1/20 scale and Ferrari 312 T4 and 189 in 1/12.
bulletThe new kits from Tamiya are the Honda S2000(curbside), Lotus Europe (full kit), Original-Teile CLK-GTR (limited run) in 1/24 scale and McLaren MP4/13 in 1/20 scale.
bulletStudio 27 is releasing the Prost AP02 in May, and the first batch of the kit contains machined aluminum wheels and correct body paint.
bulletNo news from Fujimi about the Porsche 917.
bulletUT Model's '97 Porsche 911GT1 Evo. is available.  It contains the front interior details that Tamiya kit missed.
bulletShizuoka Hobby Show will take place between the 20th to 23rd of May.

Sakatsu is going to release the 1/24 scale kit of the Panoz Le Mans '98.  I had a chance to sneak peek at the body, and it seemed that the the roof is a little bit low, but the part was cleanly cast and smooth.  The kit will be available in Feb 1999.  Sakatsu is selling the 1998 version of the Mercedes Benz CLK-GTR LM in both Le Mans and Suzuka configurations.

This year's Le Mans cars, currently available in 1/24 scale are...
bulletPorsche 911 GT1 98 - Modelers, multi media curbside
bulletNissan R390 GT1 LM 98 - Modelers, multi media, curbside
bulletToyota TS020 GT-One - Modelers, multi media, curbside
bulletToyota TS020 GT-One - Lunatic, multi media, detailed
bulletMercedes Benz CLK-GTR LM98 - Sakatsu, multi media, curbside
