02/22Loses to Riki Choshu. On the same day, the Soviet wrestlers appear for the first time.
02/25To "restart from the beginning", Inoki starts appearing in the first match of every card. During this tour, he also wrestles Minoru Suzuki.
04/24On New Japan's first Tokyo Dome card, Inoki loses in a mixed match for the first time to a Russian judo gold medalist Shota Chochoshivili.
06Marries his third wife Naomi.
06/20Founds Sports Peace Party and announces the entrance to the election for the House of the Councils (the U.S. equivalent of the Senate).
07/24Elected as a member of the House of the Councils, Inoki becomes the first pro-wrestler to be a congressman.
10/24During a speech in Aizu Wakamatsu, Inoki is assaulted by a ruffian with a knife. Inoki, however tries to continue his speech holding a heavy wound.
12/31Promotes the first pro-wrestling card in Moscow. Teams with Shota Chochoshivili to defeat Masa Saito and Brad Rheingans in his first match as a congressman.

1990
02/10Teams with Seiji Sakaguchi for the last time to defeat Shin'ya Hashimoto & Masahiro Chono. After this match, Inoki does the famous "ichi, ni, san, DAAHHH!!!" for the first time.
09/01Wrestles for the first time in seven months on the first New Japan cards in China.
09/30The 30th anniversary as a pro-wrestler. Teams with old rival Tiger Jeet Singh to defeat Big Van Vader & Animal Hamaguchi.
12/03Promotes "Peace Festival" in Iraq before the Gulf Coast War starts. This would lead to the release of Japanese hostages.

07Visits Central & South America and has an official meeting with Fidel Castro of Cuba.

08/24Defeats Lord Steven Regal in the first U.S. match in 10 years. Announces a mixed martial arts match against George Foreman (the match did not take place because of Foreman's world title win).

01/04Defeats Gerald Gordeau and Sting to win a martial-arts tournament. in Inoki Final Countdown 3rd at Tokyo Dome.
03/19Defeats Yoshiaki Fujiwara in the Final Countdown 4th at Aichi Prefecture Gym (Nagoya).
04/28Holds "Pyong-yang International Sports & Culture Peace Festival" and draws a total audience of 380,000. In the main event of the second day, Inoki defeats Ric Flair in the first meeting between two.
07/23Because of the scandal from the previous year, Inoki loses in his second run for the House of the Councils.
12/30Promotes his own card "Suddenly, Octopus Hold" at Osaka Casle Hall. Teams with Nobuhiko Takada to defeat Yoshiaki Fujiwara & Kazuo Yamazaki.
