1987 Porsche 944S |

No, it's not a kit.
It actually runs, and runs much better than my '83 Datsun 280ZX.
What are missing in my Z are tilt up roof, climate control, leather seats, working rear
defogger(^^;), etc. Power windows & power door mirrors are familiar features.
Oh, it has extra two 1/4 size seats in the back for the people who've practiced
yoga. The wheels are 16 inches, and tires are 205/55 and 225/50, that are much fatter than
the Z's 205/70 on the 14" wheels. |

Compared to the 2.8L inline 6
of the Z, Porsche 2.5 inline 4 lacks torque at the low engine speed, but its response is
quicker, and it runs all the way up to 7000rpm as opposed to 5500rpm of the Z. Fuel
economy so far is about 21mpg in city. Power isn't so impressive since it's ten
years old, and it needs some transmission work, but it seems it's been very well taken
care of. One complaint is that it doesn't have the cruise control, which was
optional back then, I guess. (Hey even my Z has it, although it malfunctioned a while
ago.) |
Some Thoughts about My Cars Without question, the 944 is very different from the Datsun 280ZX,
I have owned for seven years. Its cornering stability and quick response make my
daily driving quite enjoyable. Automatic climate control is very useful, and the
heater works very well compared to that of my ZX, which takes fifteen minutes to start
blowing hot air. The rear hatch is much wider, so it's easy to store luggage.
My ZX lacks the T-Bar roof, so I like the removable roof of my 944. The wind doesn't
blow my hair when the windows are down, and I wonder if the designers have thought about
it when designing the A-pillar. There are some dislikes however, for example the
rear speakers aren't connected to the audio for some reason. The gas mileage is 21
mpg (city), which is better than expected, but the tank capacity is too small, requiring
fuel stops more often. Finally, the engine rpm below 2000 is almost useless,
forcing me to depress the gas pedal harder. Still, Porsche is Porsche, and it gives
so much pleasure when driving.
Just because I like my Porsche so much, it doesn't mean
that I completely forgot about my 280ZX. The ZX (but not Z) is a ground touring car,
and the seats are much more comfortable than the 944's bucket seats. My car is
equipped with a naturally aspirated 2.8 liter inline 6, and the torque at a low rpm is
very useful in city driving. It starts accelerating at 1500 rpm, compared to the
944's 3000 rpm. Gas mileage of my ZX is about 19 (city), so it's not as good as the
944, but the tank capacity is 21 gallons, and the range of 350 in city and 450 on
highway.
These two cars were marketed in different segments, so
they can't be compared directly. However, one thing's common in both cars is, they provide
pleasure in driving, and that's what I care about most. |
