With the Volume 23, it's the ultimate Lotus 79 reference.

Review
The Volume 23 strongly suggests how much the F1 Modeling editorial staffs favor the Team Lotus. Nearly a half of the magazine is used for the lotus, with tons of lose up photos of the Lotus Type 79. The featured model kit is a 1/43 scale Williams FW16, and it's the 2nd part of the article. This volume also has an interesting photo collection of the illustrated massages on the EJ14 this year, showing all 18 images on the side of the intake pod of the car. This issue closes with the usual close-up photo collections. Again, this issue has many informative photos and drawings, but this issue is strongly recommended to those who're making or going to make the Lotus 79.

Close up photos included in this issue are as follows.

Lotus 79 Special (Part 1)

bulletLotus 79 1978 (6 pages, 26 photos)

Review
Despite the cover design, the Volume 22 of F1 Modeling equally features the 2004 season and the 50th anniversary of the Team Lotus. The modern cars are covered in the usual fashion, while the Lotus coverage are mainly interviews and some photos. The model of the month is the Williams FW16 by Mr. Kamimura, and it's the part 1 of 2. This issue also covers a testing scene of the three McLaren Hondas, the MP4/4, MP4/5 and MP4/6, by the Honda Collection museum staffs. I didn't find any improvements or differences, but for all F1 modelers, this is another must-buy.

Close up photos included in this issue are as follows.

The Ultimate F1 Car Detail Guide 2004

Release: August 2004
Price: 1800 yen
Japan Article Number: 4910290590746

Review
Volume 21 is dedicate to the detail fanatics, containing two reference section--close-up photos and Mr. Piora's drawings. Also included is a fixed-camera observations of Ferrari, Renault, BAR and Williams at the Monaco GP. The model section features Mr. Kamimura's 1/43 scale Ferrari 126C3. This issue also has close-up photos of two Mercedes support cars, one for the CLK55 based safety car, and the other for the AMG C32 Wagon based medical car. This issue is priced at 1800 yen, 300 yen higher than the other issues, and it's because it includes a DVD. It contains footages of new car presentations, but the cars are pretty much stationary, so it's not that interesting--certainly not the only reason to buy this issue. But, the magazine itself contains high-quality photos, and is well-worth buying as always.

Close up photos included in this issue are as follows.

bulletFerrari F2004 (4 pages, 22 photos)
bulletWilliams FW26 (4 pages, 23 photos)

Review (January 2004)
This issue of F1 Modeling is a response to fervent requests from the fans of the classic F1 machines, and the cars included in this issue re-reminds you that F1 Modeling is a true magazine for the car modelers.   It also includes two Williams driven by Jacques Villeneuve, F2003-GA in all 16 races, and the close up photos of the cars between round 14 to round 16.  The models are Tameo's F2003-GA by Hideaki Suzuki and SilverLine's R23 by Akihiro Kamimura.  This issue also includes an interesting article about a private CFD analysis of the fW24 for Grand Prix Speed - F magazine. Since I worked for CAE software importer in Japan, the article is not too complicated to understand, but I don't have a stamina to translate it.  Sorry.

Close up photos included in this issue are as follows.

Ultimate F1 Car Detail Guide 2003

Review (August 2003)
F1 Modeling vol. 18 is thoroughly dedicated to the details of the 2003 cars.  Almost 2/3 are spent for detail photos in the familiar manner, and many of them show the early version and late version.  The rest includes the F2003-GA press presentation version, the ill-fated MP4/18 and the winning machines from each race.  The model page includes a review of the Model Factory Hiro's Ferrrari 156 Shark Nose and the part 2 of Mr. Kamimura's beautiful Lotus 49.

Besides the cover, insert and random pages, the list of close up photos is as following.

bulletFerrari F2003-GA (8 pages, 43 photos)
bulletWilliams FW25 (8 pages, 36 photos)
bulletMcLaren MP4-17D (4 pages, 19 photos)

Vol.17
Ferrari F639

Release: June, 2003
Price: 1500 yen
Magazine Code: 29059 - 6/9

Review (August 2003)
This issue of F1 Modeling is focusing on the Ferrari 639, a test car, which never raced.  It was built to race the 1989 season, but political friction inside Ferrari caused delay in development, and the registration No. F189 was handed over to the 640.  Amazing 110 close-up photos show every bits and pieces of details.  It'd be a very interesting conversion project for the Tamiya's F189 early version kit.

The second feature article is about early days of Eddie Irvine, and 25 photos show the exterior of the Jordan 193, 194 and 195.

This magazine is called F1 Modeling, so it has to have something about F1 modeling, right?  Well, this issue has a few photos of Tamiya's impressive FW24 kit, but unfortunately, no comment of the kit developer.  Also, Mr. Kamimura begins the assembly of a Meri Kit Lotus 49. This's going to be 1967 Dutch GP conversion.

Close up photos of the early 2003 season are as following.

bulletFerrari F2002 (4 pages, 25 photos)
bulletWilliams FW25 (4 pages, 25 photos)
bulletMcLaren MP4-17D (4 pages, 19 photos)
bulletRenault R23 (4 pages, 21 photos)
bulletSauber C22 (3 pages, 17 photos)
bulletJordan EJ13 - (3 pages, 17 Australia)
bulletJaguar R4 (3 pages, 16 photos)
bulletBAR 005 (3 pages, 16 photos)
bulletMinardi PS03 (2 pages, 12 photos)
bulletToyota TF103 (4 pages, 19 photos)

The next issue of F1 Modeling is due July 2003, but it hasn't been released at the time of writing.  (Aug. 4, 2003)

Under the Microscope

Release: July, 2002
Price: 1500 yen
Magazine Code: 29059 - 7/28

Review (July 2002)
Another great volume of F1 Modeling has been released.  It starts with the historic F1 race in Monaco, followed by some detail photos of classic F1 cars.  This issue also contains usual close up photos of all cars, that clearly shows the wings and minor changes for each race.

Close up photos of some the classic F1 cars are as following.

bulletBrahbam BT45B (2 pages, 8 photos)
bulletFerrari 312B3 (1 page, 6 photos)
bulletFerrari 312T2 (1 page, 4 photos)
bulletmisc. Tyrrells (1 page, 7 photos)

A feature called Classic File, which is similar to its own Retro F1, is featuring the Ferrari 312T, and there are 65 close up photos of a stripped down 312T (012).

There are some useful photos of the major teams from Monaco GP, but the highlight of this issue is its usual feature, that is tons of detail photos listed below.

bulletFerrari F2001/2002 (6 pages, 38 photos)
bulletMcLaren MP4-17 (4 pages, 30 photos)
bulletWilliams FW24 (4 pages, 31 photos)
bulletSauber C21 (2 pages, 15 photos)
bulletJordan EJ12 - (2 pages, 17 Australia)
bulletBAR 004 (2 pages, 15 photos)
bulletRenault R202 (2 pages, 16 photos)
bulletJaguar R3 (2 pages, 15 photos)
bulletArrows A23 (2 pages, 15 photos)
bulletMinardi PS02 (2 pages, 15 photos)
bulletToyota TF102 (2 pages, 15 photos)

The Modeling Factory page shows some tips to modify BBR's 1/43 Ferrari F2001 to 2002 spec.  This issue also contains a visit to Cartgraf.

This is another issue with a great value, and the editorial note says that there are many inquiries from overseas, and many of them are active F1 technical crews and SAE members.

The next issue of F1 Modeling is due September 27, 2002

Magazine Code: 29059 - 5/1

Review (May 2002)
This volume is the first of the 2002 season, and it has the cars from the presentation and Rd.1.  There are many useful photos to model the 2002 cars later this year.

The detail photos in this volume are as following.

bulletFerrari F2002 - Presentation Car(4pages, 27 photos)
bulletFerrari F2002 - Australia (2pages, 15 photos)

bulletBAR 004 - Australia (1 page, 8 photos)
bulletRenault R202 - Australia (1 page, 7 photos)
bulletJaguar R3 - Australia (1 page, 8 photos)
bulletArrows A23 - Australia (1 page, 8 photos)
bulletMinardi PS02 - Australia (1 page, 8 photos)
bulletToyota TF102 - Australia (1 page, 8 photos)

The part 2 of Lotus Memorial covers the Lotus 72 Chassis No.5.  It also has 26 close up photos in four pages.  However, this issue of F1 Modeling is essentially the supplement of the F1-2000 special.  The last half of the magazine is dedicated to tons of close up photos of the F1-2000, which is under restoration.  Even if you have put together one already, you'll be tempted to super detail another F1-2000 if you see these pictures, and it is a must have for any F1 model fans. (158 photos in 30 pages!) So, this is the surprise they mentioned in the previous issue, and sure it is a big surprise.   Way to go, Sankaido.

The next issue of F1 Modeling is due June, 28, 2002.

Alesi, merci pour votre passion

Release: December 18, 2001

Magazine Code: 29059 - 1/16

Review (December 2001)
This volume of F1 Modeling features the cars Alesi and Hakkinen drove, as well as some close up photos of the 2001 F1 cars.  The retro F1 of the issue is Brabham BT52/52B.

The detail photos in the Alesi article are as following.

bulletTyrrell 018 (2pages, 12 photos)
bulletTyrrell 019 (2pages, 11 photos)
bulletFerrari 642 (2pages, 10 photos)
bulletFerrari 643 (2pages, 11 photos)
bulletFerrari F92A (2pages, 11 photos)
bulletFerrari F93A (2pages, 10 photos)
bulletFerrari 412T1 (2pages, 11 photos)
bulletFerrari 412T2 (2pages, 12 photos)
bulletBenetton B196 (2pages, 12 photos)
bulletBenetton B197 (2pages, 10 photos)
bulletSauber C17/18 (2pages, 13 photos)
bulletProst AP03/04 (2pages, 12 photos)
bulletJordan EJ11 (2pages, 12 photos)

The article on Hakkinen starts with the drawings of the MP4/13 and 14 by Mr. Piola, and it also has some pictures of the MP4/8 and MP4-12.

Modeling section includes the interview to a Tamiya staff about the F2001 kit.  Mr. Kamimura shows another fine example of 1/43 model, and this time it's the Ligier JS7.  Also, four page article on Amalgam Models is very interesting.

The Retro F1 in this issue is the Brabham BT52/52B, and there are 30 photos.

Finally, there are some close up pictures of the 2001 cars. One page is assigned to Ferrari, McLaren, Williams, Sauber, Jordan, BAR, Benetton, Jaguar, and Prost, and each has seven pictures.  Arrows and Minardi gets only four pictures each.

Special gift to the readers of my web page is a translation of the interview on the development of the F2001 kit.  Go to the translation page

Next issue of F1 Modeling is due March 29, 2002, and they are preparing for a surprise.  However, it's difficult and might not happen, they say.

It also includes the list and accompanying photo of the cars he's won so far, starting from Rd.12 Belgium 1992 to Rd.17 Japan 2001.  Also, a very few pictures of the Sauber Mercedes prototype cars(C11 and C291), Raynard 903 and Ferrari 412T2 are shown.   Thirty four photos of his helmet as well as many illustrations by Giorgio Piora have great values, too.  This is a wonderful reference of F1 cars driven by Schumacher, whether you like him or not.  Why they didn't come up with the similar idea like...Senna special?

Next issue of F1 Modeling is due Dec. 14, featuring BT52/52B.

Perfect File is basically a reissue of volume 8, but it has extra nine pages of drawings by Giorgio Piora.  His works are published in various publications around the world, so you know what to expect.  It's a great reference to know the differences between the races, and those who have missed the vol.8 shouldn't hesitate to buy it.  A must for those who want to detail Tamiya's F1-2000 kit.

Review (June 2001)
The volume 10 of F1 Modeling covers a brief review of the 2001 cars.  It has a bird's eye view of major contestants, as well as detail photos in usual manner.  This issue also focuses on the race of Monaco, and Ferrari, McLaren, Williams and Jordan from 2001 and Ferrari 312T2, McLaren MP4/2c and Williams FW14B are featured.  Retro F1 is Benetton B186, and 13 photos are shown.  There are 14 photos of the Ferrari 156/85 #27 driven by late Michele Alboreto.

Vol. 9
First Toyota

Release: April 2001
Price: 1300 yen
Magazine Code: 29059 - 4/30

Review (April 2001)
Since F1 Modeling is a Japanese publication, it's logical for them to pick Toyota's F1 test car AM-01for the cover of this issue.  However, only four pages are spent and there aren't much information on the car.  The main part of this issue is a quick review of the 2001 cars, and photos are from Australia and Malaysia.

Photos included are...

bulletFerrari F2001 (2 pages, 15 close up photos)
bulletMcLaren MP4/16 (2 pages, 14 close up photos)
bulletBAR003 and Jordan EJ11 (2 pages, 7 close ups for BAR and 8 for Jordan)
bulletWilliams FW23 and Benetton B201 (2 pages, 7 close ups for FW23 and 8 for B201)
bulletSauber C20 and Prost AP04 (1 page, 5 and 4 close ups respectively)

Since Sauber and Prost are using the Ferrari 049 engine, if someone makes a resin kit, the parts from Tamiya's F1-2000 kit can be used, can't it?

There are pages for a comparison of the front wings, tire grooves, exhaust etc of various 2001 cars.

The second feature is about Mugen, the company run by Hirotoshi Honda, a son of Soichiro.  The article includes a few pictures of the Mugen engines, as well as come close up pictures of the Footwork FA13, Ligier JS43 and Jordan EJ10.

A model kit featured in this volume is Bisica's Ferrari 126C2 by Akihiro Kamimura.  It shows 12 photos of the the model, and the kit took 320 hours to build.  Mr. Kamimura has his own home page.  Some texts are translated to English, if you are interested, check here:  http://www.linkclub.or.jp/~ak-model/

Vol. 3
McLaren Mercedes MP4/13

Date of Purchase : July 17, 1999

Price : 1300 Yen

F1 Modeling is a series of magazines dedicated to Formula 1 machines and models.  The Vol. 3 was released to coincide with the release of Tamiya's MP4/13 kit, and this book is a very good reference.  Although it's not as detailed as the Formula Perfect Manual series, this sixty four page book contains many detailed pictures to help detailing the Tamiya kit.  Most of the text about the real car has been published in many magazines, so it's nothing new, but the interview with the Tamiya crews are very interesting.  Here're some highlights.

The MP4/13 kit was designed by only a few engineers, and the hardest part was gathering reference materials.  The decals were designed by applying masking tapes on the prototype, and they were removed and scanned by a scanner for computer designing.

It takes about 6 months to design a conventional 1/24 scale kit, and in case of MP4/13, the decision (to release the kit) was made just before the Japanese Grand Prix.  The German GP version was chosen because MP4/13 won the race in Mercedes home country, and it didn't have to include the tobacco logos.  The kit project was brought by McLaren(!)  The Tamiya staff took 20 rolls of film (usually 40, they say) in December, and some of the negatives were taken away especially the diffuser area, but the guy in charge brought back some sketches. :)  The exterior was designed first, then the interior, and they had a hard time determining the suspension arms and cowl clearances.

This book also includes the cad drawing of the kit, and I think it's helpful for those 3D computer graphics modelers.
