The Miniature Vehicle Association of Wichita Kansas hosts two events annually.
One is the Toys for Boys, a swap meet of car and transportation related models and toys,
which is held in spring. The other is an annual model car contest, that takes place
in fall.
The 13th annual Toys for Boys swap meet was held on 19th of April at the
Century II Expo Hall in the down town of Wichita, and I was able to fund some kits I was
looking for. Swap meet is a wonderful place to find rare and discontinued kits, and
how much you can enjoy some times depends on your luck. This year, it seemed that I
had a better luck than the last year since I was able to find five kits instead of only
one. Followings are the models I bought at the swap meet.
I have old Tamiya catalogues, so I knew Tamiya made
a model of this car, and I knew it'd be much easier to use this kit to represent my
beloved '83 280ZX instead of using the US Airfix kit, which is a rebox of a curbside
Japanese kit. However, the ones I had found were so overly priced (around $40) so I
didn't consider buying it at all. Luckily I found a vender, who was selling this kit
for only $5.00, so it didn't take me any time to buy it. The box was open, but the
individually packed threes were still sealed.
(Reissue is due on Feb 28, 2000)
As an owner of a 944, I'm really into baby
Porsches lately, and it was a matter of time to find the kits of each car, the 924, 944
and 968. This 924 kit was partially built, and the body was painted black, but all
the parts were in the box. Surprisingly the decal doesn't contain the Porsche
emblem, but I found a decal of the 911 in the box, which does have the emblem.
Obviously, the previous owner found an extra decal for this kit. Also included were
two set of skinny vinyl tires, and a piece of sand paper. (^_^) Because of
rarity, I didn't ask for any discount, and I paid $5.00 without hesitation.
I've been thinking of buying this Protar kits for a
long time despite that the quality isn't so great. The 956 is a significant vehicle
in the history of car races, and I always wanted to add this kit to my collection.
Tamiya's 956, which I only have one, was discontinued, but Protar's 956 is still in
production. The price of this kit is usually a little less than $20, but I only paid
$7. The box was open, but all the trees were still in the plastic bag.
Aha, I finally found the stock version of the 944
turbo kit. This Hasegawa's 944 is an excellent model, and I wish I could find this
kit earlier so that I could use this to represent my 1/1 scale 944S. This kit will
probably be built as a factory stock turbo version. This kit was purchased together
with the McLaren.
This is the kit I should have used to scratch-build the
MP4/6. Since the kit was not available when I started the project, I had to make
most of the components from scratch. Anyway, it's rare to see Tamiya's McLaren kits
these days, and I missed the chance to buy it when it was widely available, I decided to
buy this kit. This kit and the 944 kit were priced at $40 and $20 respectively, and
I was able to buy them for $50, which wasn't a bad deal.
