In addition to proofreading, I transcribe audio files. I usually receive a digital audio file by e-mail or by download from a file-sharing service. Issues to Consider for Transcription Jobs

Are many proper nouns such as names, place names and product names used? If so, it will be helpful to provide references for the correct spelling. Extra time for referencing should be allowed. The same holds for audio with many obscure technical terms.

How are the accent and speaking ability? It may be difficult to understand non-native speakers or speakers with very strong regional English accents. In these cases, some portions may have to be skipped.

Are there many speakers? Monologue or question-and-answer is much easier than a rapid discussion among several speakers. Speakers in a discussion may be difficult to identify, or they may talk over each other and in incomplete sentences.

How is the sound quality? I can check it before the job is assigned to confirm that it is understandable.

What is the speaking speed? The amount of text per hour of speaking time can vary greatly depending on speaking speed. For this reason, I generally prefer to charge by the hours I spend on the job. For good quality recordings of a single native speaker, or Q&A format, at normal speed, my working time is usually about four times the length of the recorded audio and I would charge 5,000 yen per hour. For more difficult jobs, I would charge more.
