No-3 Greece-Turkey and Italty

I left Italy and moved to Greece. I took a walk for two hours. There is no describing. I have no idea about these monuments; anyway everything is great.

-11/15-Arrival at Greece

On 15 the evening around 4:30, I arrived at Patras in East part of Greece. I took a train to go to Athens. On 17th I am leaving for Turkey. In order to go to Turkey, I must pick up a flight ticket at the travel agency in Athens. Anyway I have to go to Athens TODAY. It was a little bit crazy moment.

At first, I bought a ticket to go to Athens. The departure time was 18:35. There are two hours to spend. Then I was looking for a public phone which I can use a coin, but I could not find it. I purchased a telephone card、 called a hotel Metropolis in Athens and booked a hotel. After that I called Miko. She is doing well and actually going to leave for New Jersey next Monday.

I arrived at the hotel around 11:00PM. I have not taken a shower for one day, so immediately I took a shower. (Hot water does not work well.) I went to a bed immediately.

-11/16-Comfortable and modern Greece.

I was surprised that Athens city has been developed more that I expected. Especially they are so excited for 2004 World Olympic! A lot of shops are already selling Olympic stuff. I understand that Greece does business focusing one beautiful and wonderful monument. There are a lot of travel agencies and the Internet is available at many places. At Tavelna (means "Do not eat" in Japanese- it is difficult for me...) area there are restaurants and gift shops.

In the morning I did short jogging and went to the Travel agency, "Marisol" to pick up my flight ticket. The owner of this shop is Japanese, so the employees were Japanese too. This agancy is dealing with Olive Oil too. Unfortunately the owner was out. Anyway I talked something about olive oil and I asked her to let me contact with him. There is a branch in Saitama, Japan. It is possible to meet somebody in Japan. I spent my time whole day for sight seeing.

-11/17-Unhappy at Istanbul.

I arrived at Istanbul, but I was unhappy. I emailed a lot of complains to a hotel management person.

----------------------------------

Dear Madam,

I arrived at Istanbul today. I am very UNHAPPY about your service.

You told me that somebody will pick me up at the airport, but I could not find anybody who has a nameplate saying "Go Shimada". I told you wrong information; "I will arrive around 2:30PM"-it is my fault. But I am sure that I told you my flight number too. Even though you got wrong information, as a professional people, you should find appropriate way to pick me up.

Several people (travel agency) approached me, brought me to some counters and tried to book another hotel or arrange a car for cost $30-. I was very confused about it.

Because somebody was going to pick me up today, I did not have any information of the hotel. I had to use the Internet to check the address of the hotel and then I was charged 5 million only for 5 minutes. I asked to find anyone at the information desk. Another person (not Best Western hotel person) was trying to arrange something. He told me that I must wait for another twenty minutes. I had an appointment, so I could not wait so long and I could not trust the person who will come by different contact. I had to take a taxi to go to Istanbul and paid 12 million (it was normal price, ok.)

When I arrived at the hotel, the hotel person did not have any information of me. There was no reservation on my name and also he said that the price is not $30-, but $40-. I cannot pay more than 30 dollars.

Please call the hotel and arrange something. I am waiting for your response.

Go Shimada

------------------------------

I was looking forward to visit to Istanbul again. But the first day was like this. Itユs too bad. Somehow I got an email from this hotel management agency and everything was OK, after that. I was very happy when I visited Istanbul last time, but now my good impression was broken up. Anyway the hotel was nice: wider and better than one, which I stayed last time. 30 Euro includes breakfast too. It was very good deal.

I walked around Blue Mosque and had a quick dinner. I came back to the hotel and worked on Presentation slide and home page.

-11/18-good meeting with Ercument

My friend, Ozgur arranged a person in Istanbul. Finally I could meet one person who knows olive oil and its producers in Turkey. He was fun and we had a good conversation. I understand that there is all kind of olive oil in Turkey and they are cheaper and still high quality. As I know (learned during Winterim trip) they have a good skill and good products, but they do not know how to manage and they do not know marketing. He mentioned the same thing. I got one sample and information of his olive oil. I told him that after I go back to Japan, I will talk with many customers. If their needs are matched with Turkish products, I can contact with him or visit here again.

Everything was the same

Dear Dr. Zoubir and WInterim friends;

How have you been doing? I am writing this email from Istanbul, Turkey.

I am traveling around Europe to see olive oil and meet many oil producers. Also, I visited Istanbul again for the same purpose. They produce many kinds of high quality & cheap oil. But they do not know how to do marketing and how to manage them as usual...

It is fun to visit the same place again. There is no difference between now and last time when we visited. At certain times, there are always Muslims ' songs with microphone. I went to the Internet cafe which we often used last time. Of course I had a lunch at that restaurant which we had a lunch at first day. It was still cheap, quick and simple dish. I walked around this area, visited blue Mosque and Bazzar area. I am staying in different hotel from last year's one. This hotel is called Best Western Hotel Solullupasa, located at 3 minutes walk from the Blue Mosque. I found good deal and the hotel is good enough. They offer almost the same breakfast as St. Sofia hotel does.

Only one difference is inflation. Most of prices went up. For example, Internet cafe charged 3 million for first use. The price at the restaurants also went up about 10%. However most of things are the same. I met two people so far and they are good people too. Turkish hospitality will be never changed. They kindly brought one box of olive oil sample and spent a few hours with me.

I am very glad that the study at Thunderbird works well, especially the experience of Winterim in Hungary and Turkey was very helpful for me. I appreciate for the time, which I spent with you!

I just wanted to say hello and thank you to all.

Thank you for great memory and good luck on studying or your business.

Regards,

Shimadho,. Inc.

-11/19-First time to stay at Youth Hostel

Today I came back to Greece and stayed there one night. I found a Youth Hostel, only for 8.85Euro including breakfast. It was dormitory with six people with shared bathroom. It was dirty and lockers were broken. It was good deal of 8.5 ロ, because it is very cheap and I can have a breakfast. Also I found an Internet Cafe near there. I could check many emails.

One French guy was talking to me. He was thirty years old and nice person. We talked about some general country things. Tomorrow I will take a train, go to Patras and take a ferry. <Youth Hostel picture>

-11/20-I liked ferry

I took a ferry again to go back to Bari. This time I took four beds room and I met one person who is trading olive oil around Europe. We exchanged business cards and I sent an email to him, but the email address does not work. I should send a post card. But problem is that he cannot speak English. However he said that he has a colleague who can speak English.

It is funny that so many Italian people are doing Olive oil business. I should search about activities in Italian economy. How many percent do they depend on Olive oil and tourism.<A picture in the ferry>

Also I did not like his business way

-11/21-Met another good person, Carlo

I came back to Bari, Italy again and met another vegetable producer. He is looking for a person who can import his products to Japan. This time I decided to meet him and get some idea. In the future, we may do business together if our needs will be matched each other. He has a partner whose name is Antonio. He is in charge of trading and dealing with a lot of products such as vegetable, olive oil, wine and so on. He asked or brought me many business contract things. Actually I have no idea now, so they were too much for me. Even though we do not know each other, he seems that he wants to do business as soon as possible. Especially, both in Japan and Italy, we have to build relationship first, and then we can do business. This is a basic manner in business.

By the way Carlo is nice person and he understood my thought well. When I entered his house. Immediately what I found were instruments. His hobby is playing guitar in a band. There are drum sets, Keyboard, bass and several guitars. I was so glad to have jam session in Italy. I could not imagine that I was playing music with Italian people in Italy. I felt like I was at Thunderbird and playing music!

-11/22-Funny people, Mr.Michele and said "good bye" to Pastore family.

Thanks to my friend, Antonio Soto, he introduced me to his friend, Mr.Michele. He knows many olive oil producers in Bari. He owns photo service firm (he does not have olive oil business). In the beautiful office, he deals with digital design, developing, making posters and so on. He should be very nice person, because a lot of people gathered at his office only for me to take me to olive oil producers' place. He has a variety of friends. One is working for insurance company, one is an accountant, and one is working for something.

<funny group picture>

Between 4 and 5 o'clock, they started gathering at his office. They were so funny and looked very good friends each other. They have been chatting foreverノ They were calling individually to somebody. I could not understand what was going on there...Finally we left his office around 5:30 PM and we visited one olive oil mill. At this place I could see whole traditional process (cold press). I understand the difference between cold press and hot press (traditional way / industrial way) If the process is メcold pressモ you can see whole process, because these olive oil does not have to be hot, instead keep cold. I thought Michele was olive oil producer, but he was not. It is sad that I only have one day with him. Anyway he is very kind and arranged many things for me. Only one day was not enough to visit his friends. I should stay here at least three days next time.

It was great to see Pastore family again. I wanted to say thank you and good-bye. However they invited me for a dinner. Now I feel this is my home country and they are Papa and Mama in Bari.

-11/23-Free day, found good sweater & decided to go to Venice

On this Saturday and Sunday, I decided to forget about business and enjoy my time! Whole day I was hanging around Bari downtown and enjoyed window-shopping. But I had to kill 12 hours, because I was going to take night train at 9:00pm.

I am very happy to find a sweater I have been looking for this kind of sweater for two years. This was first shopping during this trip. When I met Mr.Gioncarlo Ceci in Andria(South part of Italy), I saw that he was wearing very nice sweater. It was exactly what I wanted. Finally when I was walking in Bari town, I found very good cloth shop called "Raffaele" and immediately my eye met one sweater. After I tried four different kinds of sweater, I found favorite style. But one thing I do not like was that there is a kind of protector on the elbow. I mentioned about it to sales person and he answered if I can wait one day, he can remove it. メNo it is impossible, I will leave for Venice tonightモ I said. Then after he remembered something he saw before and gave an order to another sales person. He was saying that there may be similar one without the protector part. After I waited for three minutes, the sweater came to me. Io sono contento, メI am happyモ in Italian, I said. I shacked hands with him and left the shop. I took a blue train to go to Venice. I am so excited about it. But the train was not so comfortable. I had to share six bedroom with six people.

-11/24-Blue train, could not sleep well

Even though the period is not high season now, the train was very crowded. That is why I could not get a bigger bed. It was 2nd class couchette, but it is OK.

I met one good gentleman. If I did not meet him, I got lost the train. In the early morning I had to move the train to another one. (not change, I had to go just forward.)

Anyway I could move to another and sit first class seat. It was very comfortable. Along the sea the train was going on and it seams heading to water city Venice!! After I arrive at Venice, I have to find a hotel immediately. It was seven oユclock in the morning.

As I did in Bari two days ago, I walked around Venice to find a hotel. After about five minutes walk I found two stars hotel in the quiet narrow street. I asked a front person to let me see inside the room. There are two beds, closet, telephone and a small desk. It was good and only 35 Euro with shared bathroom.

For my experience, shared bathroom means that it is only for me, since it is low season, there are few customers and most of them prefer private bathrooms in their rooms. I like hotels in Italy, because I can check in anytime. Of course this time, the hotel allowed me to check in immediately at 7:30AM.

After I took a nap, I walked around the town. They are so beautiful and I have never seen this kind of atmosphere before. I found a cafe and seams expensive. I really like the atmosphere of the cafe so I did not hesitate to get in. I had a greatest time during these three weeks. I felt something very comfortable and I could write very good post cards to several professors. Unfortunately it was raining, so I relaxed in the room and worked on presentation and homepage.

-11/25-I always have luck

As I expected, the rain was over. I checked out the hotel in the morning and finally visited St. Markユs Basilica, the most important place and the leading symbol in Venice. St. Mark was one of the leading apostle* after death of Jesus. (*1 one of the 12 men chosen by Christ to teach his message, by Longman English dictionary. ) His body was carried into this place long time ago.

There was a flood today. This is just kidding, but what often happen here after rainy day is small flood. Water in sea is over the street and get into many shops in town. People have to wear a long boots or have to walk on decks. <pictures>

As everybody knows, main transportation in Venice is boat. I took a boat No-1 to visit St. Markユs Basilica. It took 30 minutes-very inefficient, instead I could enjoy sight seeing very much. I understand this way is the tourism way. The Basilica and churches are so beautiful. I often stopped walking and looked at the mosaic (decoration) on the ceiling, with my mouth open. I wanted to go to the tea place in which I went to yesterday. Unfortunately that place was also in the flood, so I could not approach to it.

Now I had to leave Italy for Geneva, Swizterland. I took a train to Milano and transited to another high-speed train. The high-speed train to go to Geneva was fantastic! And it is better than Shinkansen (fastest express train in Japan.) There are wider seats, fordable desk in each seat, lights, plug-in consent and so on. Especially I liked the plug-in, so I could work on my journal.

Now time, 7:45PM, I entered Switzerland for the first time. People who are working for immigration, entered into the train and checking our passport.

The best four what I was happy during these days are 1) I could find good hotel in Venice 2) I could take very comfortable train 3) I could find a good sweater 4) Had a cup of capuccino at a good cafe

Finally I met Katsuji and Keiko in Geneve and have gotten a EDA card (OPT card). Great thanks to Katu & Katsuji-san, now I can go back to the U.S.A to meet Miko. It was great to see Katsuji& Keiko and Utku &Ebru in France. It is amazing to meet Thunderbird friends in different place (not in Glendale) They live in the same apartment hotel. I knocked at the door without any announcement. They were doing well. As usual Ebru gave me a gift: sweat kind of cake.

-11/26-Stayed

-11/26-Stayed in Milano

I had to leave for Milano to catch the airplane on 26th. I had a great Japanese breakfast with Katsuji's family. I had salad, fried eggs and rice. I really missed Japanese cuisine, so I was very happy to have it.

I could find a good cheap hotel, only for 33 Euro. The room was heated and very wide enough. There was the Internet cafe near the hotel and I checked my email. During the dinner (always alone) I was reading Financial Times and one of the column was saying that US move staff from Jordan. Does it include my friend, Todd? I just wondered, so I posted a message in 2001 Wonderful classmate peer group.

Because of headache, I wanted to go to bed earlier, but 1) the neighbors speaking German were so loud. It was the typical German tone and deep-vibrating voice. 2) I slept to much in the train on the way to Milano. I could not sleep well. Also the service of the hotel was not good. But the hotel is one star, cheap hotel. It is OK enough.

-12/03-

-12/03-Jet lag...

I arrived at Milano 8:30AM and immediately I took a train to Firenze (Frorence). The view in Firenze is completely different from South part of Italy. Anyway it is beautiful. I met Mr. Carlo Cattaneo who produces wine, olive oil and some meat (animals). I stayed in his Agritrismo (local cottage). It was more luxury one. Most of rooms are kind of suite rooms and there are two rooms: dining room, bedroom, bathroom with sofa and kitchen. The room is very big.

I could not sleep well in the airplane, since departure was 6:30PM with 7 hours flight. They served two meals, just after the departure and right before the landing. There were only 4 hours between the meals. It is amazing that I slept for 12 hours today.

-12/04-

-12/04-Slept 12 hours?!

I slept for 12 hours! I woke up at eleven o'clock. I enjoyed sightseeing in Frorence. Unfortunately I was raining
