-10/30-良いスタートが切れました!

ローマにて一泊した後、5時間かけてバーリまで電車で移動しました。長い旅だが何とも快適な電車だったので、読書に専念できた。

パストーレボビオ一家には感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。彼ら、イタリア人のホスピタリティー(親切でいろいろと捧げてくれる)は素晴らしいもので彼ら自身もその親切ぶりに誇りを持っている。親切にも家族全員で私を駅に迎えに来てくれた。更に私のためだけに通訳を雇ってくれた。ほとんどのイタリア人はこんなに親切なのか?加えて今週末にはなにやら若い人を集めてランチパーティーを企画しているようだ。

イタリア語を少しでも話すことができて非常に嬉しい!時には冗談もかまして、人間関係を作る上では最高のツールである。昨日は着くや否や何カ所かの観光へ連れて行ってくれた。その途中ある食品展示会にも立ち寄ったが、そこでついに念願の"パストーレボビオ、エキストラバージンオリーブオイル"に巡り会うことができた。このオイルは島商としても取り扱いを決めつい先日あるお客様からオーダーを頂いたばかりであった。夕食は外食である。非常に美味い!ここでわかったことは日本人の食事とあるイタリア料理は似ている部分があることである。たとえばアプタイザー(前菜)には揚げ魚(おそらく鰯(いわし)と思われる)、生のたこ、イカ、オムレツなどが出てきた。

パストーレボビオ家族はばかでかい家に住んでいる。なぜ私の知っている人々は皆大きな家に住んでいるのか?この家の最上階に可愛い部屋があり、キッチン、トイレ、お風呂全て揃っており私専用で使用可能。非常に快適な寝室は、アメリカのアリゾナで住んでいた時のグリーンツリーアパートの寝室の3倍はあるであろう。<Bed roomItaly405.JPG>非常に心地よく寝ることができたものの、未だひどい時差ぼけがありこの日は朝の5時に目覚めこの日記を書いた。

やってしまった!最初の粗相はポットを焦がしてしまったことだ。今朝コーヒー牛乳を飲みたくて小さい携帯用の湯沸かし器に牛乳を注いだ。しかし、これはお水の湯沸かし専用だったためにひどい焦げたにおいに加え、うす茶色に染まった牛乳ができあがった。家族の方に謝らなければならない。イタリア語の辞書を調べ丁重に謝る文章を書き留めて用意した。

困ったことにアメリカ入国の際に問題が生じえることがわかった。一年間のOPTと呼ばれるビザを取得前にアメリカを出てしまった為だ。とにかくグレンデール(サンダーバードがあった場所)にいる日本人の友達、カテューにそのOPT カードを受け取りフランスキャンパスにいるかつじさんに送ってもらいように頼んだ。12月に私がかつじさんを訪ねるときに受け取れるようにした。全ては万全だ。カテューとかつじさんには感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。世界中に仲間がいることは素晴らしいことです! 感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。みなさまの支援無しにはこの旅行は成り立ちません。

-10/30- Good start!

I took a five-hour train ride from Roma and arrived at Bari yesterday evening. Despite the long ride, the train was very comfortable and I could concentrate on a lot of readings.

Great thanks to Pastore Bovio family. Italian hospitality is great and they are proud of it. I do not know this is only for me or one only this family has. All the family members picked me up at the station and were going to spend whole time with me until this weekend. Moreover, they arranged an interpreter (Simona) only for me. I found out that this weekend, they would organize a lunch-party at their house and a lot of young people would get together here.

I am so glad to be able to speak a little Italian (un po). I could talk and even joke with them a little. It was a good start to build relationships. Yesterday, they took me to several historical sites in downtown, Bari including some castles and church. We went to a food exhibition. At the exhibition, I finally got to see a "Marrianna Pastore Bovio Extra Virgin Olive Oil"-the name of olive oil which the family produces and also I hope to distribute in Japan. After that, we had a dinner outdoor. The foods were so yummy. I realized that most of Italian appetizers are quite similar to Japanese ones: fried fish (looks Iwashiノ probably it was "sardine"), raw octopus, cattle fish, omelet and so on.

The family lives in a huge house here. It looks like all the people I know live in big houses! On the top floor of the house was a cute private space with kitchen, dinning room, bathroom and bed room. All of them are available for me to use. The bedroom was three times as big as my room at the Greentree apartment (I lived in the US for school). I still have a jet lag. I woke up at 5 AM this morning, so I have a lot of time to this journal.

My first mistake was to burn a pot. This morning I wanted to have a cup of coffee with hot milk. I poured some milk in a portable boiling pot and turned it on. I did not know the pot is available only for water. The bottom of the pot was burned and smelled so bad. I have to apologize to Pastore family (Mi dispierce).

Oh, I had a some problem with my US work permit. It needed to be Fedex to me in Europe for my reentry to the US.

Anyway I asked Katu to pick it up and send to Katsuji in France so that I can get it whenever I meet him in December. Thanks to Katu and Katsuji-san, everything worked out. It is great to have friends all over the world. Thank you very much! I cannot have done this trip without my friends help.

-10/31-若い人々の親切ぶり

時差ぼけのために、5時間しか寝れなかった。でも良しとしよう。早起きは三文の得。今日の午前中パストーレボビオ一家はオリーブオイル農園に連れて行ってくれた。一カ所は有機無農薬、もう一カ所は普通の(普通といっても最高級)のオイル用オリーブを育てている。2種類のオリーブを混ぜて作っている。ちょっと酸っぱい味のするコラーティーナと少し甘みのあるオイヤローラを混合することによりバランスのとれたオイルを生み出すことができるそうだ。実際に農園にて、労働者が木によじ登り枝をひっぱたき、オリーブを落としている風景を見た。非常に肉体労働である。当初私はこの農園でオリーブの「つみ取りを手伝わせて頂きたい」と願い出たが受け入れてくれなかった、その理由がわかった。上層と下層がしっかり分けられているような気がする。農園ではいわゆる"現場現場"の

-10/31-Young people hospitality!

I was able to sleep for five hours due to a jet lag, but I felt fine. This morning, the Pastore Bobio family took me to olive farms. One is organic one and another one is standard one. There are two kinds of olive trees and they mix these olives based on the amount of production. I actually had an opportunity to see harvesting of olives. First, you hit the branches to let olives fall from trees. Next step is to extract juice from the olives. Finally only oil is separated from juice. When we were in another mill (the place is for pressing olive to oil) one owner invited us to her house next to the mill. She seems to be a typical Italian. She said that when she saw visitors and she likes them, she often invites them to the house. When we left the mill, she said "I have a Japanese friend now" and she looked happy. I was glad to hear it.

In the evening, the family kindly arranged a gathering with young friends, who took me to the downtown in Bari. The place was very nice and many young people were hanging around until late at night. We had a great pizza and drank beer (a cup of coffee for me as I do not consume alcohol). I have never had such a delicious pizza before. In addition, the pizza was very light taste, juicy and mild. I especially liked the thin crispy crust.

PLAN OF GO IN PASTORE BOVIO FAMILY

Arrived at Bari, had coffee at the Piazza Ferrarese;

Tour in the old town:

  • Piazza Ferrarese: Archaeological Site where once there was the city gate; the marks of the carts that entered it to get to the market square, are still evident. The city gate was destroyed in 1813, when the city was enlarged, under the influence of Joachin Murat (Napoleonユs brother in low)
  • The Vallisa church, meeting point of merchants coming from Ravello, now deconsecrated and used for concerts and plays.
  • The Ferrarese Palace, with a sun clock on the top.
  • Piazza Mercantile: Palazzo del Sedile (XV century building, used as parliament until 1806, and then transformed into theatre)
  • Piccinni house (musician born in Bari in1728)
  • Pillar of shame (a sort of tribunal; in XVI century debtors and unfaithful women sitting on the lion, were tied up to the column)
  • Via Venezia and wall, S. Antonio Abate fortress (one of the four ramparts of Bari; the first documents on it date back to the XV century. Now it is closed; it opens every 17 January, during S. Antonio day, when pets are blessed in the little chapel)
  • Basilica di S.Nicola, Built in 1087, during the Norman domination, in order to keep S.Nicolaユs relics, arrived from Turkey. Apulian Romanesque style; visit inside: the naves, the Statue (with the three gold balls) the women gallery, the gold roof representing S.Nicolaユs miracles and life; the transept: frescos, baldachin, Bona Sforzaユs grave;
  • Visit in the crypt, in which there are his bonds, located under the transept. The miraculous red column, reminds one of the most popular among S.Nicolaユs miracles. (The night before the consecration of Pope Urbano II, in 1089,the works in the crypt were not finished yet, since a column was missing; people from Bari were awaken by a great light and bells sound, coming from the crypt. They saw S. Nicola and his angels putting the missing column; thanks to them, the following day the Pope could consecrate the crypt. S. Nicola is the patron of not married ladies. According to the legend, if a lady makes a turn around the メMiraculous Columnモ at 6 oユclock on 6th December, she will find a husband)
  • Visit to S.Nicolaユs tomb; from his relics, メla Mannaモ, a holy liquid, comes out. Once a year, on the 6th of December, the manna is collected, diluted with holy water, and offered to the believers.
  • Cathedral dedicated to S.Sabino, built in 1035 in the Apulian Romanesque style, about; now it is being restored;
  • Norman Swebian Aragonise Castle: built by the Normans in 1131; enlarged by the Swabian Frederic II, in 1233, and surrounded by high ramparts thanks to the Aragonese. Today it is the seat of the Regional Superintendent of Monuments. The castle houses a museum containing plaster of the finest pieces of Romanesque Sculpture in the region.

Bread exposition in Piazza Ferrarese.

Visit in Polignano: town built on the edge of a high cliff, (20 meters) riddled with caves. Walking in the old town: visit to the Cathedral, dedicated to the Assunta, built in ogival Romanic style, consecrated in 1295.

Dinner in Polignano at "La Tana Marina": menu: fish based antipasti, cavatelli (fresh pasta) and sea fruits, risotto.

31 Thursday

  • Visit to the Pastore Bovioユs olives groove at Bitonto (particular regards on the differences between two kinds of olives: Ogliarola and Coratina); harvest achieved from high stepladders, through shaking the tree by means of a special pole, so as to make the olives fall on some large canvas; visit to the little old church in the field;
  • Quick visit to an oil mill in Bitonto; olives grinding.
  • Visit in Bitonto to see the bottling; snack with bruschetta dressed with Marianna oil, tarallini, taralli with almonds, sandwiches with olives paste, onions, mushrooms and wine.
  • Lunch at S.Spirito, the restaurant called メDa Teresaモ by the sea. Menu: raw fish, bruschetta, sea-urchins, spaghetti with sea fruits, little local cakes covered with sugar, grapes, pineapple, and coffee.
  • Visit to the oil mill in Toritto. Olives arrival; olives weighing; olives grinding; oil tasting; oil selling; Tea and cakes were offered by the typical Italian lady, visit the tomatoes hothouse.

1 Friday

  • Jatta Museum in Ruvo; short walk in Trani (the Cathedral by the sea); lunch at Ruvo, Jatta brothers house; menu: heart shaped ravioli (fresh pasta) full of spinach, ricotta (local fresh cheese), sage; polpettone (meat pie); potatoes; cakes. Small table-hockey game and table tennis; walk in the メjungleモ
  • Trip in Alberobello, to see the Trulli: unusual rural stone dwelling; circular in shape and made of dry stone, with a cone shape roof ending with a pinnacle. The walls are whitewashed and the cone is tiled with concentric rows of grey slates.
  • Legume festival in Alberobello; menu: tray with chick-peas and tubettini (a kind of pasta); lentils, pods, broad bean and chicoriesキtarallini;

2 Saturday

  • Sammichele countries; harvest by means of a shaking machine (a new one in the cousinユs field; an older one in Pastore Bovioユs field) and by means of some special combs
  • A big party at home, with 50 guests; menu: antipasto: salami, olives, focaccia, tarallini, cheese; zucchini parmigiana, cavatelli with tomato sauce; barbeque: zampina (sausages); mozzarella, burratine; salad; lots of cakes.

3 Sunday

Trip in Matera; Castle, Square; underground Church; Cathedral; Sassi di Matera; visit in the typical house; church; restaurant; menu: antipasti: ricotta (soft white cheese), peppers, aubergines, zucchini, salami, focaccia, foglie d'olivo (olive leaves shaped fresh pasta), with tomato sauce and rocket.
