   気にする,かまう

     * ラフな言い回しなので,親しい間柄でなければ避けた方がいい.

   〜に真剣に取り組む,本格的にとりかかる

14  go haywire

   故障する,めちゃくちゃになる

     * 手がつけられないほど乱雑で,めちゃくちゃなイメージ.

     コンピューターのプログラムミスが続発したため,ATMネットワークに障害が発生した.

15  put paid to

   終わらせる,望みを絶つ

     * 主にイギリス英語.予想外の出来事によって,望みや計画がふいになってしまうこと.

   The figures put paid to any suggestion that a voting majority in favour of a united Ireland could emerge.

     これらの数字は,アイルランド統一派が議会で多数を占めるという見解を沈黙させる.

16  pick up

   (会話など)再び始まる・始める

     * pick up は「拾い上げる」,「景気が上向く,速度が上がる,病気に感染する」など.

   The second installment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy picks up where the first one left off.

     「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」三部作の第二部は,第一部の終わりのシーンから始まる.

17  add up

   納得がいく,意味を成す

     * 元の意味は「計算が合う」

   The Bush administration rejected its application because it thought the business plan didn't add up.

     ブッシュ政権が申請を却下したのは,経営計画に納得がいかなかったからである.

18  running joke

   定番ジョーク

     * この "run" は「ロングラン」と言う時の,『続く』という意味.

   Things got so bad that Wall Street became a running joke on late-night talk shows.

     あまりのひどさに,「ウォール街」は深夜のトークショーの定番ジョークになった.

19  cut it

   上手くいく,効き目がある

     * 否定形で,力・才能・やる気が不足していることを表す用例が多い.

   Chestnuts like "buy and hold" and "stocks for the long term" don't cut it

     「持ち切り戦略」や「株は長期投資」といった古くさいやり方では上手くいかない.

20  turn 〜 on one's ear

   〜をくつがえす

     * turn 〜 on one's head も同じ意味.

   The world is about to be turned on its ear by the rise of micropower.

     マイクロパワー(小型発電技術)の出現によって、世界が一変しようとしている.

21  put〜on the road to...

   〜に...をもたらす

     * the を省いて put 〜 on road to... とする用例も多い.

   Bush hopes his new team can help put the economy on the road to recovery.
