Profile

Toshiji Fukuda

Born in 1948 in Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan

I grew up in the center of Utsunomiya City (population 300,000 at the time), and every night I heard the roar of the Ural Owl. Countless fireflies lit up, and kingfishers jumped into the garden pond. When my grandmother got married, Japanese giant flying squirrels were flying around. And Japan's rapid economic growth...people were vibrant and life became more convenient...but creatures from their hometowns quietly disappeared from our lives. Let's at least leave proof of their existence on film...This is the origin of my nature photography. Then, in June 1990, by chance, I went on a fishing trip to Khabarovsk, Russia. There, through the time tunnel, my hometown remained. Ural owls flying over the city, butterflies swarming around, flowers blooming in abundance...It was just like the hometown where I spent my childhood. With the cooperation of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a trip to Siberia has begun. Every year, I spent over 100 days traveling to different parts of Siberia..! learned a lot. What Japan has lost, the splendor of Japan's nature, and the close connection between Japan and Russia's nature. We hope that you will experience the nature of the Russian Far East through this website and deepen your understanding of nature.
