When these windows were being prepared a couple of years back, I had prepared the mounting spaces while the windows themselves were still being made. I had of course ordered them at a specific size, but was a little bit nervous about what the actual dimensions would be. So I had prepared the wall opening with a 5mm safety space on each side. Before I can do the finishing work now, these spaces have to be sealed off.

The gaps are just a bit thinner than a pencil ...

The local hardware store sells cans of spray-in expandable foam for this sort of thing, but I think I'll just use some of the fiberglass I have left-over from the wall construction. There's no danger of drafts here, because the flange on the outer side of the window completely closes off the gap at that side; it just needs to be insulated ...

Next step is cutting the pieces for the sills and the inner 'frame' for the windows. The three sill pieces have plenty of interesting angles and notches. Here's one being fitted:

... and then slipped into place.

Once all the pieces were cut and test fitted, I gave them a coat of clear sealer:

Tomorrow, Sadako is bringing over a bag of plaster that she has left over from a job that she did on the walls of her computer room. If it looks like there's enough, I'll have a go at finishing off this alcove then!
