Here's the continuation of the framing, moving onto the back (south) wall. I can't do the whole wall in one piece, as the funny angle of that west wall cuts into the floor space I would need to build it. So it's going up in two sections.

The east wall is easier, as it is at right angles to the back wall - no compound angles to cut. It looks warped in this picture, but that's just the camera lens distortion; it's actually pretty true ...

The white thing in that photo is a roll of 'sill seal'. I got quite a surprise when I went to the lumber store last week to buy some; not only did they not have any - they had never heard of it. 2 x 4 construction still isn't so common here in Japan, and it seems that the traditional method of raising house walls doesn't use a seal where the sill contacts the foundation. But I want to ensure that the wood doesn't pick up moisture from the concrete, and also want any small gaps tightly plugged. The space behind the wall will be well ventilated, but I certainly don't want any drafts or leaks down along the floor.

I made an 'emergency' call to my daughter in Vancouver, and she picked some up and shipped it over ...

A few 'pages' back you saw the half-pipe 'outlets' for the ventilation system; there are two similar pipes buried here. The pipes will be connected by a duct before the floor goes down, allowing air from behind the wall to be vented to the outside ...

(P.S. Hey Matt, don't get excited because the verticals aren't lined up properly here - this is just a test fitting, and they aren't toed in yet ...) :-)
