It was a cold morning. I was supposed to get up early and to visit Lake Cowichan this morning. I remembered there was a nasty 8% uphill along the way to Lake Cowichan. I had little energy, less passion that would've driven me to go up there. So I decided to save the Lake for the next time knowing I would regret. (And I do regret now while writing this.)
I started today's bike ride at 8:30. Took Cowichan Lake Rd. It has actually many uphills which I never expected. Also the road is rough in spite of being paved. I thought mountain bike would be more appropriate for cycling around this area. However, I enjoyed the beautiful pastoral scene. When I passed by one shed in a farm, somebody said "Good Mooorning!" waving her hand. Very friendly people and neat scenery.
Back to Hwy 1 at Duncan. Duncan wasn't fun to ride on the bike. Neither shoulder nor sidewalk was very wide. And heavy traffic for a road in Vancouver Island. I was a little frustrated by the cars coming and going. But later on the road became wider when I got out of the town. The bad news was that the wind started blowing from south, again a head wind to me.
After passed Cowichan Bay, I decided to skip Victoria and to go home. For some reason I started missing everybody at home. Rather than going down to Langford I took a ferry which start at Mill Bay. This ferry takes you to the other side of water skipping mountainous area down south to Cowichan Bay.
I missed ferry again by 10 minutes. I waited until 1:50. The south wind was very strong.
Tiny ferry came and picked us to Brentwood Bay across the water. I was able to see the ferry's wheelhouse and saw the captain steer reading a book. Hm-hum. I guess I could handle the ferry, too.
The south wind turned into tail wind after getting off at Brentwood Bay, because now I head my bike north. Took Hwy 17A which probably would be less traffic than Hwy17. There was a school bus just in front of me dropping off kids here and there. Every time it dropped off the kids I had to stop too, because the road was too narrow to pass the bus. Some kids started chasing me. It was fun to run a tiny race with them.
Got to Swatz Bay at around 4:00. At 4:30 departure. The sky was going to be covered by thick clouds. I had dinner onboard. Cheese Bacon Burger Meal and Chocolate Cake. It's a treat to myself.
Arrived at Tsawwassen Bay at around 6:00. The final stretch to home was easy thanks to the tail wind and flat terrain of Delta except some hilly legs of River Rd. I got home at 7:34. Lucy met me first and Lance with 2Ms, Michael & Mitchell second and Lindsey third. It was great to see them.
And, sleeping on the Bed (!!) was undoubtedly great, as well.
