Jakarta Intrenational Performance Art Festival 2000
2-4 March Jakarta

I happened to meet Japanese performer artist-Director of NIPAF Seiji Shimoda and Ben Suzuki of the Japan Foundation at the latter's branch office in Jakarta. We talked informally about ideas of holding a performance art festival in the capital of Indonesian team networking of Asian artists with the foundation It was then the very beginning of this once undreamed-of performance art festival in Indonesia, dubbed JIPAF 2000, which we now imagine to link up with the chains of Taiwan's TIPAF and Japan's NIPAF. However, arduous period of turbulence in this country had made us wonder whether it was possible. At the time Indonesia had already endured multidimensional crisis in terms of politic, economic, social and cultural. Along with the downfall of New Order government, in the one side, Iive condition has broken most people into trepidation, though on the other, many have also been made to perceive it as a looming expectation of real changes. At corners of this far-flung country people trumpeted the word of "reform" to sign the coming of new era: the so-called democratic culture and freedom of expression. Freedom fighters pursuing deep sense of humanity, for sure, have had to walk over long, steep yet rocky roads toward the present but far away along toward imagined future. Unceasing riots and violence unfurl during this term of sometimes-breathtaking changes as a result of social discontent and inter-group and ethnical tension and conflicts. While in the meantime we learn many Asian countries are also writhing in their struggle to democracy. It is the Utan Kayu theater (TUK), special spot in this sprawling capital of Jakarta, a meeting and gathering place of artists, journalists, and all sorts of pro-democratic activists, that has made the first ever held performance art festival in this full-paradoxes country comes true Spearheaded by Goenawan Mohamad, the former chief-editor of respected Tempo magazine, once banned by the former regime, and helped by all of his staff, the theater and its community with its adjacent facilities have committed to various activities to support and straighten out roads towards untangling people's mind into a more open ways of thinking and of expression. It is no wonder, then, at one time a joint agreement was signed between the responsible of the theater and the Japan Foundation, allowing me to conduct the organizing of this JIPAF 2000. In this festival we, the board of organizers, are far from pretending to any dream of achieving a certain target. We just start from a simple choice: to promote the Indonesian performance art and of its neighboring countries in the Asia-Pacific region . Within at least the last 15 years, performance art activity in Indonesia and some Asian countries is flourishing. Some pioneer artist who has been earnestly working and dedicating their life for the art has found a "new" way and language on contemporary expression. A good performance art festival is what we try to achieve in the hope that it will bring-up more creativity and more artistic contribution to the society. Also hopefully the festival will become the milestone of the performance art history in the regions that is virtually becoming more and more important.
