Introduction to "the network and social consciousness surveys (NECO surveys) in Korea and Japan".

In Japan we conducted 3 surveys in Tokyo(Capital),
Sendai(central city in local area, largest city in north eastern part of Japan, population 1 million),
Senpoku(rural area abuts northern Sendai).
The each sample sizes were 1500 and the response rate were 55, 70, 64%, conducted in 1999, 1997, 1998.
All samples were random sampling from the electoral roll.

In Korea, we conducted 2 surveys in Seoul(Capital),
Deagu(3rd largest city in Korea , population 2.5 million).
The each sample sizes were 1600 and the response rate were 62, 63%, conducted in 2003 and 2004.

Purpose of the Survey
The main purpose of this survey was to collect data on the socio-political opinions of
people who were over 20 years old.

Interview Method
The interview method employed for this survey was the direct person-to-person interview.
Interviewers visited respondents’ home and the respondents wrote down the answers for the questions by themselves.

Sampling Method (in Japan)
All samples are random sampling from the electoral roll.

Sampling Method (in Seoul)
The sampling method for this survey was a multi-stage technique: First, the Seoul area was partitioned
 into 14520 sectors, of which 40 sectors were randomly picked as primary sampling units (PSUs);
second, 40 households per each PSU were chosen by the systematic selection method; third, a single respondent
was identified at each household by the latest-birthday-method. Up to three attempts are made for the contact
 of the selected respondent.
The sampling method in Deagu was simillar with the method in Seoul.
