Once the stairway hole was ready, there weren't any more excuses ... it was my turn to get to work!

Before I could start building anything though, it was necessary to rip out the floor that had been built in that room. It was quite solidly made, but they had skimped on one vital component - there was no insulation under the flooring, and this was fatal to my plans of making this room warm and comfortable even in the coldest part of winter. So one day in November, when I felt that I could 'steal' some time from my printmaking work, up it came.

It wasn't possible to salvage much of the wood - they had glued the plywood down onto the little 'joists', and then glued and nailed the floorboards to the plywood. Getting it all up involved ripping most of it to pieces ...
