                  The 'Where I've Been' section talked about the
                  past, but before we can talk about 'Where I'm
                  Going', let's have a look at 'Where I'm At' ...
                   
                  
                  
                  
                  These two close-up scans of images from my
                  Hyakunin Isshu poets' series are shown at the same
                  scale. On the left is the first print in the set
                  (carved in 1988), and on the right is one from the
                  final year (1998). 
                  
                  The most obvious difference is perhaps to be
                  found in the hairlines - the older print has 25 in
                  14 mm, not quite 2 per millimetre, and the newer
                  print has 71 in 17.5 mm, or just a fraction over 4
                  per millimetre. 
                  
                  But it is the eyes and eyebrows that show a more
                  important difference - the ability of lines to
                  taper and swell as needed. The lines on the older
                  print look as though they were drawn with a
                  mechanical pencil; those on the right are
                  carved.
