This of course is not my
own design; it was designed by Hishikawa Moronobu,
and I must have photocopied it from a book on
ukiyo-e and pasted the copy on a block for carving.
I would very much like to be able to remember just
why I turned to doing a reproduction at this point
(this is still mid-1981). Had I been disappointed
by the poor results of those first 'original'
prints?
Perhaps so, because I was to make four
reproductions in a row before getting back to any
more original work.

At the time I made these early prints, I had
little knowledge of traditional Japanese
printmaking, and hadn't yet realized that one could
work as a craftsman being completely independent of
the design side of things. I made these next few
prints for technical practice, but was still
expecting to be making my own designs when I became
a 'real' printmaker.
Real soon now! :-)
