Now that the basic structure of the alcove is ready, I can bring down the two file cabinets that will be fitted here:

I bought them very cheaply on an internet auction last year, and knew right then that this would be the place where they would later 'live'. They are just the right height to act as the base for the platform top, and just the right width to allow for a space in between, should I decide to work in a 'normal' seated position, instead of just sitting on top of the platform cross-legged.

And now for a bit of 'backtracking'. Until I actually got this far - with these two cabinets sitting in place - I wasn't really sure just how much clearance there would be on top of them; should I build a 'joist and panel' top surface for this printing platform, or should I just lay the panels right on the top of the cabinets?

But now that I can take an actual measurement, I see that there isn't so much vertical clearance available between the bottom of the windows and the top of the cabinets, so rather than use joists and panels, which would take more depth, I'll go for a thicker plywood (25mm), and will use the cabinets themselves to support part of the span. But this means that there will be no clearance for the electrical cable that will supply this area (I had been intending to run it through just under the top of the platform), so I lifted one of the floor pieces, and ran that wire underneath through the base instead.

This was also the last chance to put the wires for the three strip lights 'to bed' under the centre piece of plywood, which can now be finally screwed into place ...

The switches for the three lights will be on the front face of the printing platform right between the two cabinets, just in the right position for me to reach round and access them as I sit printing.
