Before I can put on the final outer siding, I have to put up a series of wood strips screwed to the wall to hold it. I'm told that keeping the siding away from the plywood/Tyvek this way gives a chance for the wall to 'breathe' properly; any moisture coming out from the inside is carried away by air moving up this gap. There is so much 'junk' wood around here because of the earlier demolition that it would be silly to go out and buy new wood for this. In this photo I'm slicing up some of the old plywood that was under the floor to make the strips.
(I'll have to get a better shot of this table saw later ... I made it myself, using an old motor that I scrounged at a nearby motor re-winding shop. It's very powerful, with brake and clutch, and it goes through wood like this as though there was nothing there ...)
Once I had enough strips I drilled and screwed them up into place on the wall:

This is a very steep valley - this work is taking place in the second basement below street level, and yet look how far down below that stream is!
