笠懸は流鏑馬・犬追物と並んで武士の代表的な弓馬術であった
流鏑馬と笠懸の大きな違いは射方にある
笠懸は武者の堅固な鎧の唯一の弱点である顔面を振り向きざまに狙うという一撃必殺の武術といえる
実際に新田義貞をはじめとした幾多の武将が笠懸の達人に倒されたといわれている
低い方の的は特に小笠懸と呼ばれる

At the era of Samerai, Japanese warriors were protected with robust
armor.
Armored warrior was so hard to shoot down,
most effective way is to aim its weakest point - naked face.
But it is too small to shoot so they developed a special technique -
KASAGAKE.
In fact, several major Samurais were killed by the kasagake masters.
