７２ヶ国参加のコモンウェルス競技会
マンチェスター市で成功裡に終わる
2002年8月5日のＢＢＣは、マンチェスター市で開催された英連邦競
技会（Commonwealth Games 2002)が、成功裡に終了したと報じてい
る。
日本ではあまり取り上げられないコモンウェルス競技会であるが、
今回はエリザベス２世女王戴冠５０周年記念大会だけに、閉会式は
土砂降りの雨にもかかわらず大きな盛り上がりがあったようだ。
ＢＢＣ放送を紹介方々、憶良氏流のコメントをつけてみよう。そこに
は底知れぬ英連邦の未来戦略も見られるからである。
1 若者の「友情」を強調した女王と「平和希求」の提灯
女王は閉会を宣言すると共に、４年後2006年のメルボルン大会で
の再会と、マンチェスターで示された友情を持ちつづけるよう呼びか
けた。
She also called on the athletes to assemble again in four years
in Melbourne and to continue displaying the "friendship" they
had shown in Manchester.
また「平和希求」と書かれた1700の提灯の点灯が競技場を飾った。
A spectacular presentation with over 1,700 lanterns which ended
with the message 'Seek Peace' lit up in vast letters on the
floor of the arena.
2 注目すべき72の参加国とロンドン五輪への布石
もともと英連邦はＵＫを含め54ヶ国であるが、コモンウェルス競技会
には、ＵＫはイングランド、ウェールズ、スコットランド、北アイルランド
に分かれて参加している。
目下英連邦参加資格を停止されているパキスタンやジンバブウェ
も競技会には参加が認められている。これは政治とスポーツは別だ
という考えであろう。その他の15ヶ国は英国の海外領土である。
今回のマンチェスターでのコモンウェルス競技会開催は、関係者
参加者に、生涯記憶に残るほどの感動を与えたであろうと、主催者
は明言している。
この大会は、2012年の五輪開催をロンドンに誘致するのに、大い
なる布石となるであろうと見られている。
"I believe for everyone touched by the spirit of these Games,
it is a memory that will be a valuable part of the rest of our
lives." （Games organiser Charles Allen ）
British Olympic Association chairman Craig Reedie said they
could help pave the way for a possible bid from London for the
2012 Olympics.
3 爽やかなスター選手たちの言動
72の参加国の若者たちは11日間の熱戦を繰り広げた。なかでも注
目を浴びたのは、男子水泳のオーストラリア代表、イアン・ソープ選手
が、出場する7種目すべてに金メダルをとるかどうかであった。
結果的には100ｍ背泳で、同僚のマット・ウェルシュ選手に敗れ、銀
メダルとなったが、それでも６種目の金メダルは流石である。
ウェルシュ選手の記録54.72秒は大会新記録である。
ウェルシュ選手は200ｍ背泳で失格となっていたが、彼はそれをくよ
くよせず、よく寝て、ものの見事に100ｍに集中し、念願の金メダルを
獲得したという。
この思いっきりのよさと図太さは、日本の選手にも真似してもらいた
いものだ。
Welsh was disqualified in the heats of the 200m backstroke on
Thursday but said he had put that behind him.
"I'm completely over that," he said.
"The only thing on my mind was making sure I could sleep. I hate
that feeling where you're disappointed and keep yourself awake
all night. I held nothing back for this one.
"I was very, very relaxed going into it, probably a little bit
too relaxed. Probably didn't go out there as hard as I would
have liked.
一方惜しくも全種目制覇を逸したソープ選手も、「初めて挑戦した
100ｍ背泳で銀がとれてうれしい。自分は７つの金に目標を設定して
いたのではない。７種目に全力を集中することができてよかった。マ
ットは素晴らしい背泳のチャンピオンだ」と、１９才とは思えない素晴
らしい発言をしている。
Thorpe, taking part in his first backstroke final at a major
competition, posted a time of 55.38secs.
And the 19-year-old insisted after the race that he was not
disappointed with silver.
"That's my best time," said Thorpe. "That's a good result for
me. I'm more than happy to come second.
"If I hit the wall and I've done my best I can be happy with
the result.
"I've never focused on just getting seven golds, I just
concentrated on seven races.
"I'll be able to walk away happy, there's no disappointment.
I'm very happy with the way I've swum.
"I congratulated Matt. He is world champion, an excellent
backstroker and a great swimmer."
4 最優秀選手は片足の女性泳者、ナタリー・デュ・トア選手
大会の最優秀選手の候補は各国から一名ずつ推薦され、選考委
員全員一致で南アフリカの水泳選手ナタリー・デュ・トア選手に決ま
った。
ナタリー・デュ・トア選手は、前回のマレーシヤ・クアラランプール
大会では14才の選手として将来を嘱望されていたが、昨年2月に交
通事故で左足の膝から下を失った。
一時は絶望の淵にあったが、５月に水泳を再開した。その時には
歩くことすらままならず、コモンウェルス大会出場など、遠くの夢であ
ったという。しかし、彼女は見事にカムバックした。
今回は800ｍ自由型（健常者）では決勝に残り、９分13秒57の自己
ベストを出した。
She was back in the pool by May, before she had even relearned
to walk and made the Commonwealth Games a distant target.
And in a Games first, she also made the final of the able
-bodied800m swimming event where she swam a personal best
of 9min13.57sec.
また身体障害者レースでは50ｍと100ｍ自由型で、世界新記録で
優勝した。
The 18-year-old from Cape Town won golds in the 50m and
100m disabled freestyle swimming events, breaking two world
records on the way.
彼女の不屈の闘志は、南アフリカの選手たちだけでなく、多くの人
々に感動と逆境を克服する勇気を与えたと大会委員長は激賞した。
"Natalie is a truly remarkable individual who deserves our full
admiration," said Mike Fennell, Chairman of the Commonwealth
Games Federation.
"Her achievements in Manchester reflect her determination in life
- to overcome adversity and in the process inspire others including
her South African team-mates."
さらによいのが、１８才の彼女の発言である。
「私はいつも、事故の前と全く同じ自分なのだと思うようにしている」
"I always imagine myself to be the same person as before the
accident," she said.
彼女は今後、健常者の大会に出るのか、身体障害者の大会に出る
のかまだ決めていないという。
世界には素晴らしい若者たちがいるものだ。
5 大会の経済効果
大会開催中、マンチェスター市内のパブやレストランは、通常の3倍
以上の売上があったそうだ。
また大会終了後も、この開催が起爆剤となって、年間来訪者は30万
人以上増加するであろうと推定されている。
大会のメイン会場は、5万人収容のサッカー場に改造され、2003/4年
から、マンチェスター・シティのホーム・グランドになるそうだ。
日本のサッカー愛好者も多数訪れ、上記の30万人の中に計上される
のであろう。
