Autumn deepens
Brown bears are becoming more active in preparation for their hibernation. The Kamchatka subspecies is one of the largest
in the world and the average male's weight is 350-450 kg. Occasionally, male bears weigh up to 700 kg in autumn.

There is not enough food for the brown bears on the Kamchatka Peninsula until the red salmon migrate from the Sea of Okhotsk. From spring to early summer they wait for the red salmon while eating grass or young leaves on the trees. In 2020 the sockeye salmon numbers were extremely few so brown bears frequently fed on each other.
According to the confirmed records 30 (but probably more than 100) bears were killed and eaten. Many bears also escaped from nature reserves and were shot dead. The brown bears I met in the spring of 2021were the heroes who had survived the harshest trials.
This little bear is a one year old child of Bochka (The word means "fat" in Russian). My method of taking photographs is keep waiting at a good photo location. I had been holding my camera in the same place for about a month. Bochka and her son accepted me as part of the landscape as they moved around.
Every morning I walked from the guard hut to this sandbar. Then I sat back in the chair and spent all my time there until sunset. I tried to keep the bears away from me and made sure that I moved my arms and legs extremely slowly, not raising my voice. Day by day the individuality of each bear became clearer and the chances of anticipating their actions increased. On the other hand, the brown bears seem to have accepted me as something harmless. Just a few meters away from me they breastfed, flirted, snored and slept.
