WILLIAM DEVERELL NAMED WINNER OF NORTH AMERICAN HAMMETT PRIZE

The North American Branch of the International Association of Crime writers is delighted to announce that Trial of Passion by William Deverell (McClelland & Stewart) has been named the winner of the organization's annual HAMMETT PRIZE for a work of literary excellence in the field of crime writing.

The winning title was chosen by a group of three distinguished outside
judges: Margaret Cannon, Book Reviewer with the Toronto Globe and Mail; Mark Danner, New Yorker staff writer; and Victor Navasky, Publisher and Editorial Director of The Nation. The judges selected from among five finalists nominated from the hundreds of crime books published in 1997. These five were chosen by the organization's nomination committee headed by Peter Robinson.

Other books nominated for the HAMMETT PRIZE were Cimarron Rose by James LeeBurke (Hyperion); Trunk Music by Michael Connelly (Little, Brown); A Wasteland of Strangers by Bill Pronzini (Walker); and Acts of Murder by L.R. Wright (Doubleday Canada)

Deverell, who lives near Vancouver, British Columbia, will receive a bronzetrophy, designed by West Coast sculptor, Peter Boiger, whose falcon-headed thin man is designed to symbolize Dashiell Hammett's literary spirit. The award ceremony will take this evening in Philadelphia during the organization's international conference held in conjunction with Bouchercon29, the World Mystery Convention.
