And it works the other way too ... knowing when 'enough is enough' - too much pigment can be just as detrimental as not enough. In much ukiyo-e work, the black outlines of the prints should actually be a deep grey tone. The older print on the left has a much too strong 'contrast'.

And the purple colour shows many white patches - evidence of weak baren pressure during the printing. The one on the right, printed more recently, shows much better balance and smoothness.
