The fourth exchange had a theme - self portrait. I swallowed hard before signing up for it - doing a face in a woodblock print is a very difficult job indeed. I found a way through the puzzle though, by taking a photograph, breaking it up into 'tone levels' on my Macintosh, and then making it as a 'reduction' print, in which the block is cut away piece by piece during the printing process. The lightest portions are printed first, with the printing areas of the block gradually getting smaller and smaller as you go along, until the last step is the printing of the deepest tones. The block is destroyed in the process, so there will never be any more of these made ...
