Techniques of Woodblock
Printmaking ...
During the years I lived in Canada, trying to learn the basics of
printmaking by myself, I searched for any material at all that would
help show me what to do. I didn't find much, as although there are
plenty of books and other materials in Japanese, there is very little
in English. So in recent years, with nearly two decades of experience
in printmaking behind me, and having made many thousands of prints, I
started to promise myself that as soon as I possibly could, I would
try and find a way to rectify this situation and share some of my
experience with others who are interested in this craft.
With the development of the Internet, it seems that the perfect
medium for doing this has arrived, and it only remains for me to get
things down on 'paper' and get them organized for you ...
So I have started to put together the
Handbook
of Woodblock Printmaking. Slowly but surely, I am developing
a complete manual covering many aspects of this craft.
It is certainly not finished yet, but if you have a look, you will
perhaps find a lot of interesting information ...
In addition to the 'Handbook':
- ... I've made a few notes pointing you to some
published materials on
printmaking (in English) that you might then be able to dig up.
- ... I've copied here into these pages, some
simple articles on printmaking that I
wrote a few years ago for one of Tokyo's English language
newspapers. They are quite basic, and certainly don't amount to a
'manual' of printmaking, but they would have been a great
assistance to me had I been able to read something like this back
in the beginning. You may find them useful ...
- ... Although I can't finish the 'book' yet, I can
certainly take the time to answer
questions. If enough of you ask
interesting questions, and if I print them with replies here, this
could become a useful resource ...
Update! At last! I do now finally have a printmaking book published! Aimed primarily at the beginning printmaker, but packed with useful information for somebody working at any level, my book 'Your First Print', is now available from my Mokuhankan print shop. And it's not just a 'normal' book, but a RichMedia book full of video and audio explanations too! Visit the information page to learn more about it.
