Mazda RX7(FD3S)

Scale : 1/24 1/24
Manufacturer: Tamiya Aoshima
Category: Factory Stock Curbside
Light weight, powerful engine, tight but functional cockpit and eye catching style are Mazda's answers to the early 90's sports car market.  The FD3S was a return of a pure sports car, and the car has been continuously updated.  Now, the one available in its home market features 280 HP engine.  Model kits were released by three Japanese manufacturers, Tamiya, Aoshima and Rosso, and they all are curbside.  Tamiya later added the left hand steering dashboard and engine details that sits on the lower half of the engine.
rmboxster3.jpg (32352 bytes)The red one shown here is the Tamiya kit, and I omitted the optional parts such as the front air dam and rear spoiler because the car looks fine without those parts.  The body was painted with custom mixed Pactra water based paint, and Testors gloss coat was used to protect it.  The clear markers were painted with Gunze's Mr. Aqueous Hobby Color.  The tail garnish was painted from the back, using Tamiya's smoke, leaving the part transparent.
rmboxster3.jpg (32352 bytes)The engine is heavily modified by referring to a lot of magazine articles and the dealer brochure.  The wiper blades and arms are Modeler's photo etched parts.

rmboxster3.jpg (32352 bytes)This black RX-7 is the Aoshima's curbside kit, and the body seems more accurate than Tamiya.  Tamiya's RX-7 looks more dynamic in comparison.  This kit was built to represent the home market version with all the optional parts.  This kit comes with photo etched badges.  The body was painted with Dupli-Color gloss black, and this caused a disaster.  It crazed the surface because the primer layer was too thin, and the surface turned coarse.
rmboxster3.jpg (32352 bytes)I used sand papers in various grades to smooth the entire body, then I continued using the Dupli-Color spray.  Fortunately, this resulted in extremely strong adherence of the paint to the body, and after polishing the body, it created a highly glossy black finish that I had never achieved before.  I omitted the gloss coat, because I thought it was unnecessary.

I almost gave up on finishing this kit, but it turned out better than my average model after careful recovery process.
