Experiences in Contemporary China
要旨
1. The significance of the anthropological approach in studying
China
a) the ethnographic tradition in and of China
b) the problem of everyday life
c) the idea of practice
2. My background and interests
a) the Shaanxi research: the practice of everyday life in a rural community
b) the Guanxi research: the problem of high-tech industrial development
c) my on-going research on media and information technology
3. Some initial discussions:
a) the question of change. Whenever people talk about China
these days, both within and outside that huge social space, either from the
official or from the popular perspective, they cannot avoid the idea of
"change," such as in the discourse of reform, development, and so on. What is
change? How can one talk about it in this context? What do we mean by it? What
kind of change is taking place? How can one understand or conceptuallize what is
occurring out there?
b) the question of inequality and indifference. What is the
nature of this ew structure of inequality in today's China, which is a common
observation?
c) the problem of trust and values. What is happening in
the econfiguration of a moral space within which people are struggling in aily
life? What is the sense of self cultivated in the practice of everyday life in
today's China?
