I participated in Maker
Faire Shenzhen with Mr. Imade, which I also
participated in 2016 and 2019. Mr. Imade-san is
the person I met at Maker Fair Taiwan. |
We went from Japan to Hong
Kong, and from Hong Kong I went to Huanggang
Port in Shenzhen and entered China.
To get to Huanggang Port, we used a shared bus
called SkyLimo. Japanese people need a visa to
enter mainland China.
We took the subway to the hotel. To get the subway, I used a transportation card
called Shen Zhen Tong. I was able to still use
the Shen Zhen Tong that I purchased 7 years ago. |
In China, you need a
smartphone to pay at restaurants, take public
transportation, arrange a car, etc., but in
order to use apps, foreigners are required to
undergo time-consuming personal authentication.
SMS is required for authentication, so you will
need a phone number that can be used in mainland
China. (A Japanese phone number is fine as long
as it can receive SMS.)
Different SIMs are required for Hong Kong and
mainland China. |
The next day, we went
sightseeing to Huaqiangbei by subway.
Huaqiangbei is an electronic town similar to
Akihabara in Japan, but on a much larger scale. |
After sightseeing, we went
to the venue and set up. There is a DJI building
near the venue. |
While setting up, I met Eric Pan of
Seeed studio. Seeed studio is a manufacturer of electronic
components and a company that organizes Maker Fair Shenzhen. |
I also took a photo with Alison, who is
in charge of organizing Maker Fair Shenzhen. She prepared the
documents for obtaining visas for exhibitors from overseas,
including Japanese people. What she is holding in her hand is
a shrimp cushion that I bought for 100 yen. The children love
it, so I always take it to exhibitions both in Japan and
abroad. |
The person on the left side of the photo
is Mr. Imade. Mr. Imade was exhibiting equipment for juggling. |
Although it rained on the first day of
the event, many people came to visit. |
Japanese exhibitors were gathered in a
nearby section. |

last year's Maker Faire Taiwan. |

The robot costume "Stack-san" was
popular. He uses the M5 for audio and monitor control. |

Ted, one of the organizers of Maker Fair
Taipei. Maker Fair Taipei was held in Taiwan the following
week. |
Vincent from Singapore.I met him a long
time ago at Maker Faire Singapore. Maker Faire Singapore is no
longer held. |
Jimmy, the CEO of M5 Stack. He also comes
to Japan's Maker Faire, so I see him from time to time. |
Robot fortune-telling, which write
fortune with Chinese letters, were as popular in China as they
are in Japan. |
In the evening, Seeed studio's 15th
anniversary party was held. |
0x0F means 15. |
Past maker fairs were shown on the stage
screen. This photo on the screen is from the 2016 exhibition. |
I met Monica, a former Seeed staff
member.
She is the person I met at Maker Fair Tokyo in 2016 and who
gave me an invitation to Maker Fair Shenzhen that year. She is
currently involved in a machiya project in Kyoto. |
The second day was also a great success. |

The main exhibition
locations are the passageways between buildings.
Tents were placed where there were no roof. |

A robot makes cocktails.This booth
seemed to have received 3 or 4 medals. |
I got three medals.
Generally, exhibitors are given award called Blue Ribbon at
Maker Faire. There are two types: "Maker of Merit" and
"Editor's Choice". Editor's Choice is chosen by the magazine's
editor's, and Maker of Merit is probably chosen by someone in
organizer staff. At Maker Fair Shenzhen 2019, a total of 36
blue ribbons were awarded, but the badges are not physical but
digital.

At Maker Fair Shenzhen 2023, 30 guests (possibly sponsors,
etc.) presented the "Best Exhibitor Badge" (physical) to the
exhibitor they thought was the best at the venue. |
In the evening, there is a beer party
near the venue. |
The next day, there was a Seeed Studio
factory tour. Approximately 30 people participated in the
tour. Mr. Imade and I were the only Japanese people there. |

Maker Fair robot was stored in the
warehouse. |
In the evening, there was an M5 Stack
networking event. I think there were about 20 Japanese M5
users. The event planner is Mr. Takasu, famous as Mr. Maker
Faire. He always wears cat ears. |
Jimmy's table is notorious for being
messy. After the event, Jimmy treated the participants to
dinner. |
On the way back, the three of us,
including Stack-san, who was staying at the same hotel, took a
taxi and a Skylimo.
There was a robot at the Hong Kong airport.
Robots are no longer rare. |
