1. There's a lamp shini' bright in a cabin,
　 In the window it's shinin' for me,
   And I know that my mother is praying
   For the boy she is longin' to see:

	I can see that old lamp in the window
	It will guide me whereever I roam.
2. In the lamp-light each night I can see her
   As she rocks in her chair to and fro
   Though she prays that I'll come back to see her
   Still I know that I never can go

        But I've sinned against my home and my loved ones
        And now I must evermore roam

インターネットで探しているうちに、次のような叙述に出会った。

「この歌について、くわしいことは知りませんが、子どもの時に、ラジオで聞いたような記憶があります。 たぶん、NHKだと思います。 「みんなの歌」のような番組がたぶんあって、誰にも親しめる曲を「ホームミュージック」として流していたのではないのでしょうか。 ・・・・・この曲をラジオで流そうと選んだ人が、どんな理由、動機で選んだのかはわかりませんが、当時はまだ敗戦から10年くらい、「わが子帰る日いのる」という歌詞を、「岸壁の母」のような気持ちで聞いていたお母さんもいたかもしれない、などと、今になって想像してみたりします。《「座・むら囃子−私の好きなうた『谷間のともしび』」http://www.ztv.ne.jp/mmura/songs/LampLightin'Time.htmlによる》」

実は、私にも同様な記憶があり、メロディーや歌詞はその時に覚えたらしい。今回調査して戦前の、しかもかなり早期に、東海林太郎によって歌われたことを知ったくらいである。戦後だろうというのは、日本語の歌詞と同じ正確さで英語の歌詞も記憶していたからでもある。 

（注）英語の歌詞については、出典により異なるものがある。
即ち、コーラスは全て1番と同じ、つまり2番のような別コーラスはなく、また3番から4番までの歌詞がある。
