We thank the Marubeni Foundation, the Marubeni Corporation, and the writers and editors of "WORKING QUADS" from the bottom of our hearts for this grant. We will work entusiastically for this project.

The summary of the application

The Research Association on Work of the persons with severely disabilities was inaugurated in 1989, and consists of quads and specialists. The Research Association has researched the possibility of working ( the intellectual productive activities ) of the persons with quadriplegia who need attendant service program and cannot drive a car. In this research, through fact-finding inquiries on the productive activities of the quadriplegics due to spinal cord injuries and other impairments in Japan and America, including researcher who is also a quadriplegic by spinal cord injury, we compare the social background, and consider the possibility of using high tech for the productive activities of the quadriplegics by spinal cord injuries, from the point of view of the individual with severe disability.

The Research Association on Work has also published "WORKING QUADS" (the journal of rhe Research Association) No.1`No.10. ("WORKING QUADS"No.9 is A4-size, 124 pages, color 4 pages, 1000 copies. )

The "WORKING QUADS" editorial office has 6 editors and 66 writers. Its 66 writers consist of 59 quads, 1 paraplegic and 6 non-disabled.

The quads with severe disabilities who need attendant services and cannot drive a car find it difficult to live with their family, not to mention of independent living. They sometimes have to stay in hospital long after they get well or have to enter nursing home. It is also hard for them to live in their own home. They have to depend on their family, public attendant services being far from sufficient. Few opportunities for significant and gainful jobs are available to them as compared with the non-handicapped. Public offices employ the disabled on the condition that they can commute and work for themselves. Problems for the severely disabled in finding a job have not yet been resolved.

Such being the case in Japan, "WORKING QUADS" has been focusing on the Intellectual productive activities of the severely disabled. However, there have emerged, some, not many, severely disabled who really work. Research Association on Work of the persons with severe disabilities try to find those "working quads" and makes them known to the society. Among the fifty-nine severely disabled who contributed to "WORKING QUADS" 26 of them are self-employed, 11 employed, 4 students and 18 unemployed. They have no intellectual disability. They improve their quality of working life by thinking, contriving and communicating, within their abilities and assets. Their jobs range from the small-scale self-employment (e.g. data-entry), to the professional self-employment and to the large-scale and professional self-employment (e.g. translation, management of supplemental study school, judicial scrivener), and to the large-scale self-employment (e.g. management of rental building). The examples of the quads introduced in the magazine "WORKING QUADS" are as follows. Mr. Fukasi Tsutsumi came back to his former position as a stuff of the Bureau of Sewage of Fukuoka City. Ms Noriko Sogabe came back to her former position as a junior high school teacher in Amagasaki. Mr. Yasuo Shiozawa works with National Rehabilitation Center for Physically-handicapped by commuting in his own car driven by his wife. Mr Ota, who works for Mitsubishi Co. Taiyo, has had his house built near his working place. In "WORKING QUADS" the quads themselves report concretely about their motivation and possibility for jobs.

They report how they find work and how they are working in the actual situation. They are very useful to the readers. We receive many responses from home and abroad, and they evaluate "WORKING QUADS" very highly. We have received many letters from American and Canadian disabled people and specialists. It is very useful for quads, their families and the society to share the information which can reduce the quantities of assistance for quads and increase their intellectual productivities. Many quads find "WORKING QUADS" very encouraging. The information about what can and should be done for quads is given through "WORKING QUADS" to the specialists and the society.

Quads can live and work on their own if there would be attendant services, houses to live in, mobility and education.
We would like to make a proposal to form the infrastructure on which quads can work as a matter of course.

For this purpose, we, the quad writers of "WORKING QUADS", would like to play a central role to form an information network and build a database which would help to empower the quads who need attendant services and cannot drive a car to work.

We think the quads who exchange information and personal contact recover more easily. It is very important to form a database of information. The Research Association on Work of the persons with severe disabilities and its journal "WORKING QUADS" will continue to build information network to present useful information.

We will be happy to receive your letters and comments.

Thank you for your corporations.
