The second one was sketched the same way, although it is simpler and cleaner in design.

During this time, I was making no attempts to either sell prints or promote my work in that direction at all. I was just trying to get better at it. I do remember that I had a vague plan to make a group of prints that portrayed women in kimono, and to try and get one of the large kimono magazines interested in doing a monthly page that would feature them. I assumed that I would then get orders from readers of the magazine.

But I never followed up this idea, because I got a bit sidetracked. Although I had made three prints in the few months since coming to Japan, it would turn out that over the next couple of years, I would be able to make no more than one a year (plus New Year cards).
