Decoy :2

decoy2-1s

Green-winged Teal (L=38cm, Sen)

I made this decoy as an entrance ornament of my home. Urushi-finish is not popular but I tried to obtain its nice gloss.

Tufted Duck (L=23cm, Zelkova)

I aimed oval grain on this decoy then it became rather fat one. The way of urushi-finish is repeating paint-wipe-dry enough times.

decoy2-3s

Tufted Duck (L=18cm, Katsura)

I carved the plate to hold this round stomach decoy. My daughters love this small cute decoy.

decoy2-4s

Red-breasted Merganser (L=45cm, Sen)

Fortunately, I got a pair of wood to make a couple of this decoy. Japanese rock paints are used under the urushi-finish.

decoy2-5s

Mallard (L=60cm, Douglasfir)

It was difficult to carve this real size heavy decoy. It's also urushi-finish but mat texture looks nice on this decoy.

decoy2-6s

Tufted Duck (L=45cm, Sen)

I enjoyed making this decoy because of his funny face. The gloss of urushi is slightly semitransparent so that it matches the quality of various woods. I painted eight times in all.

decoy2-7s

Falcated Teal (L=50cm, Kihada)

This duck has unique hair style called Napoleon's hat. I fixed the dark green paint by persimmon astringent. The wood absorbed urushi well and the surface became mat texture.
