This is the first decoy which I made by my self. I carved this decoy with sole chisel of my tools. |
I made an effort to paint his head in dark violet with oil stain. The body was finished with clear oil so that to appeal nice surface of wood.
I painted dark oil stain to make contrast with grain. The material of this decoy was a trash wood which I found at the construction spot.
I enjoyed making this decoy with good smell of wood. I finished this decoy with wood wax for natural feeling.
You can turn the head of this decoy. I rubbed in kashyu (another type of urushi) to obtain the gloss.
This wood was very hard to carve but efforts were crowned with nice grain.
I think oil finish is very suitable for this kind of wood.

I bought this decoy in favor of his funny face. I teared off paint and recarved, then I was satisfied with large grain.
After finished with oil, I rubbed a hard wax for nice gross. I took some photographs of each step of making this decoy. Take a look at another section later.
