Dual Citizenship Ken Shimada First, please let me excuse my posting in English, as I am in Hong Kong today, and I have no access to any PCs with Japanese FEP. Regarding Dual Citizenship, most of people opposing to dual citizenship are arguing as below : 1) Overlapping government powers over one single person, for example, compulsory military services. 2) One should not have the rights in plural countries. It's true that dual citizenship holders have possibilities that plural government powers conflict over them. And they are benefitted from plural countries like working rights. Those types of arguments are out of question because many of countries have their treaty on dual citizenship like E.U countries to avoid plural military services. Regarding the rights in plural countries, this should not be interrupted by anyone else, as we need to consider the backgrounds like parental relations and etc. For Canada/US/Australia, dual citizens are noted regarding the possible conflicts between governments powers, military services and etc. I have my knowledge regarding Canadian government position regarding dual citizenship, which include but not limited to : 1) To use only Canadian passport when he/she travels. 2) He/she needs to know that some countries like Poland, Cuba, South Korea, North Korea recognize him/her only as their citizen even if he/she had completed his/her paper works to abondon their original citizenship. The reasons are : For example, North Korea, anyones who were born outside of North Korea are solely North Korean citizen if they were born under a Korean parent even if this parent is living in South Korea as well as any other countries, per North Korean Civil codes. Thetefore, if a Canadian of Korean ancestry visits South Korea and/or North Korea, they may impose a military service duty. As a conlusion, if a Canadian citizen is planning to visit a particular country where military services are imposed on any persons ethnically belonging to that country, do not go. I know many examples of Korean-Americans/Korean-Canadians in the age of military services visited South Korea for touristic purpose to find that they were subject to the military services, and have been taken to military camps from the airport's immigration booth. My argument is, Japanese government should not prohibit dual citizenship. Rather, Japanese government should make all dual citizens concerned make their choice, to keep all of their citizenship , or to keep only one whichever they like.
