As part of the
ancient traditions, the
main building of the Inner Shrine is rebuilt every twenty years, it
accoutrements renewed and its sacred treasures made new, observing the
rite of moving the shrine called shikinen
sengu that is still carried
out to this day. The author Svend M.
Hvass is one of the first to engage in serious research on the shikinen sengu rite. He has
conducted careful research on shrine architecture and other aspects of
traditional technology, as well as on Shinto-related culture,
festivals, and ritual, and has made an enormous contribution to better
appreciation of these subjects.
The Shinto shrines of Ise were largely unknown
to Europeans until the early 1870s. By this time the indigenous art had
already caught the attention of the West following the opening up of
Japan in 1854, but it was some time before architecture was made the
focus of similar attention.
You will see more on Ise on the official Ise
Jingu website.
