I was born in Takada,
Niigata-ken in 1952. Went to Niigata Univ. Attached
Junior High School, Takada and Takada High School.
I am an 'emeritus' professor of English Linguistics
in the Department
of English and American Studies at Kobe City
University of Foreign Studies, where I studied and worked from 1975 to 2006.
Currently I am a Professor of English Linguistics
in the
I have a BA in English Language and MA in English
Linguistics, both from KCUFS.
My tutor and supervisor at KCUFS was the late
Professor Tomoshichi Konishi,
who was one of the greatest English grammarians of recent times in Japan and
was best known for his work on Genius
English-Japanese Dictionaries and Kenkyusha’s Lexical Grammar Series.
I stayed several years in London to do my
postgraduate work at School of Oriental and African Studies (1978-79, Dept of Phonetics & Linguistics) under Professor R.H. Robins and at University College London (1985-86, 1990-91, Dept
of Phonetics & Linguistics) under Professors Neil V. Smith and Dick Hudson.
I did a PhD
course in (English) Linguistics in Osaka City University and at University College
London supervised by Professor M. Ohnuma and Professor Dick Hudson respectively. My research has been in the framework of Dick Hudson’s Word
Grammar.
I spent a year
as a Visiting Scholar in the Dept
of Phonetics and Linguistics in the University of
Manchester from 1996 to
1997.
I was Visiting
Professor of Linguistics in the Dept of Humanities, Michigan Technological University, Houghton MI, USA
in Aug and Sept. 2010.
