This
is a relatively easy 6 hour (there and back) hike. Tenninkyo is at a
slightly lower elevation than the bottom of Asahidake so it's a little under
three hours heading toward Tenninkyo and a little more heading back.
The start of the route at Asahidake is difficult to find. Go to the campground and look for some signs. We started off walking on the cross country ski course before we realized which route was correct.
If you start at Tennikyo, you'll have a very steep section to negotiate as you climb out of the Tenninkyo gorge. After that it's pretty easy going.
Access: Take route 1160 going east out of Asahikawa.
Onsens: There are numerous onsens at both Asahidake and Tenninkyo. The Asahidake visitor center has a handout listing them all. Prices for the onsens range from about 500 yen to about 1500 yen.
