There are many courses to get up this mountain. |
We've climbed this mountain twice and each time we used a different route. The first time was a bit on the hairy side. First we climbed Sandan which was an easy climb. Shown on the maps it shows that it is possible to go from Sandan across to Tokachidake. It is possible but due to landslides the path is very steep with a lot of scree and no ropes to help you up. Next you get up onto a very narrow ridgeline with about a 2-300m drop either side. If it is windy you should not attempt this way. If you have a fear of heights you should not try this path. Once you get to the other side of the ridge you'll find that it has been roped off from the Taiho-iwa junction.
The second time we climbed, we went straight up from Bogakudai. There is ample parking here. The climb is rocky and steep in parts - flat in others. It is popular with climbers but not crowded. We climbed in mid September this time and it was getting cold. There were ice formations at the top and the wind was a bit chilly. After we hit the peak we headed toward Bieidake - about another 2.5 hours a really easy part of the hike over volcanic ash. At one point we lost the trail - the markers disappeared but you'll find that you have to go up. From the top of Bieidake to the hut should take you about 1.3 hours. It is a pretty steep climb down. On the way down toward the hut you come to a crossroads with a sign. The Kanji for Hut is 小屋. We stayed on the mountain that night and the temperature dropped below 0 so if you're planning on staying up there be prepared.
