Subject: With thanks - and thoughts for the future
Thank you for passing this along to your good colleagues in the Grundtvig
Society of Japan:
Friends:
First, I want to thank you for the opportunity to meet you in Kyoto and in
Tokyo in January. Even though we communicated mostly through translators,
because of my language igornance, I learned a great deal about your
thoughts and activities with respect to Bishop Grundtvig and his "folk
school" visions in the Japanese context. But even more, I felt a warm
link with you all, on a personal level, and this I value even more highly
than any academic-type knowledge that we shared.
Second, I want to share some thoughts about how we might, together, build
on our conversations for some future collaboration between the Grundtvig
Society of Japan and the Folk & Peoples Education Association of
America (FPEAA), the U.S./Canadian network I am associated with.
I see three concrete possibilities that could grow out of our
conversations - all of which would be appropriate foci for funding
proposals to the Japan Foundation's "Grassroots Exchange Program", due
July 1, 2003 [http://www.cgp.org/cgplink]:
1) getting educators and weaving artists together to learn more about SAORI, and to explore possibilities for a serious initiative
along these lines in the U.S.;
2) a visit to the U.S. for Grundtvig Society teachers, to visit and learn more about the U.S. charter school movement and
alternative education efforts - as well as to visit some of our folk
school-inspired centers; and
3) collaborative design and co-hosting of a June 2004 week-long seminar
here in Ithaca, New York, which would part of the bi-annual Institute for Peoples Education and Action, the program arm
of the FPEAA.
I also want to continue working with whomever might be interested toward a
presentation session and workshop on Grundtvig's influence in different cultures
around the world, for the Comparative and International Education Society
(CIES) meetings in March of 2004. This would provide an opportunity for scholars
as well as practitioners (the CIES membership includes both) from Japan
and the U.S. to meet with Grundtvigians from the Philippines, South
AFrica, Bangladesh, Palestine and Eastern Europe, as well as Scandinavia
- and to plan, together, for possible broader exchanges and collaborative
activities in the future.
I truly believe that Grundtvig's message is needed now more than ever in
this troubled world. It would be a privilege and a pleasure to work with
you toward such a goal.
Again, thank you for your warm hospitality during my recent visit to
Japan. I look forward to your thoughts.
