Rokugou Irrigation Canal

When walking in the street of Kamata area, Mr. Greenwood found remains of old irrigation canal used in Edo times about 400 year ago. The construction of this canal was started in 1597 to feed water to Rokugou district (now Ohta district) of Edo (now Tokyo). Water was taken from Tama River at Izumi (now Komae city) and crossed many rivers by bridges and distributed waters to many villages in Rokugou District. (West of Haneda airport) Now most of the old canals were covered up and converted into the road. You can still distinguish old canal route on the map. There are remain of old canal near Nubame station of Mekama line.
