Forest of Witrich, Gonta-zaka, Commonwealth War Cemetery

Mr. Greenwood visited Commonwealth War Cemetery. On route, near Harajyuku crossing, He found the forest of Witrich. It was once owned by a Swiss, Mr. Witrich. After his death, the land was donated to the city of Yokohama.

Forest of Witrich

Gonta-zaka is the first steep hill climb of Tokaido after starting from Edo (old Tokyo) in Tokugawa era. The heritage route was placed on the ridge. Modern route runs in the valley.

Milestone of Gonta-zaka

Commonwealth War Cemetery stays at the top of east hill of Gonta-zaka ridge. This cemetery was built and maintained by the commonwealth war graves commission, on behalf of the government of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, India and Pakistan.

The land on which this cemetery stands is the gift of the people of Japan for the perpetual resting place of the sailors soldiers and airmen who are honoured here.
