引用した人、他 | 「烏有(うゆう)に帰す」は漢の詩人司馬相如の「子虚賦(しきょのふ)」が起源で「烏有の事」ということばは、小説などの虚構、こしらえ事を意味するようになった。 友人田中利一が『烏有に帰す』をアーネスト・サトウが『烏の持ち物になる』と訳しているらしい。あれほどの日本通がこんな間違えは一寸ヘンではと疑問を呈す。 友人清水謙は原文を見ずに「Ravenの所有に帰す」としたとすれば流石Satow、驚嘆の極み!Satowならではの英語訳だと断言。実際はcrowと いう語がつかわれたわけだけれど、程度の差はあれど意味は分かる。それに英語国民はギリシアの故事は知っていたとしても漢の詩人司馬相如のことなどは全く 知らないわけだから漢字の「烏」の意味を有効利用するのが賢いと言うものではなかろうか? |
