| This villa is surrounded by trees
on a hillside in the national park in Japan. The site is located on a south
slant near a hilltop on a mountain ridge. It is an attractive place to
enjoy open views of the mountains. Considering to preserve the surrounding landscape as intact as possible, this building is placed on the low-gradient area in the site. As the results, the shape of this villa is curved by tracing the landscape contour line. Vertical interval of slant where this villa exists was divided at some floor levels. The building is consecutive with geographical features in the surrounding in a ground plan as well as a in a cross section. The different level of floors has divided interior space gently, and has brought spacious and versatile spatial feature. Considering earthquake resistance and earth load resistance, light wooden roof has been put on rigid concrete boxes and concrete walls. The roof rafters are not only the structural element but also the finishing materials. The roof rafters have brought an effect to the interior design. The roof rafters come into sights of people as facade when they are going up the slope surrounded by trees. The roof rafters set continuously in parallel with a small spacing from outside to inside of the building form the ceiling and show their presence as the facade mingling with surrounding trees. Sofa, shelves, side tables, and steps are set in the graceful curves tracing the landscape contour line, and the slope vertical interval in the site has been transformed to the furniture used in daily life. The louvers consisting of round rods, which are designed to liken surrounding trees, divide the inner space visually into several parts. In the design of this villa, the advantage of the slopes and surrounding trees in the site has been made use of as much as possible not only in the plan and elevation but also in the physical aspects as like the design of furniture and details. In this project, a lot of our efforts were concentrated to resolve and arrange the conditions coming from the surrounding natural environments of the site. It was because we aimed at producing a villa mingling with the surrounding attractive nature rather than taking the surrounding attractive nature into the villa. That is to say, we are aiming for a place between architecture and landscape in which people can enjoy natural environment as like hiking over hill. |
