Job
Electrical Engineering (Honors) graduate from Canterbury, registered (Telecoms) Engineer; working in a Test and Measurement/Process Control systems company. Translating (J-E)/technical writing in these fields — also computers, electronics, and physics — since about 1977. Copywriting of sales, advertising and marketing material — and the occasional translating, rewriting, and editing of technical papers — are the most challenging and enjoyable parts of the job. Have also translated/dubbed training videos.
Interests
I enjoy consulting and training in bilingual (E/J) computing — Telecoms and Internet, Word Processing, Graphics and DTP — and upgrading/troubleshooting PC and Mac software and hardware. I have done presentations on SuSE 10.0 LINUX, PC backup, troubleshooting/security, graphics, and digital photography. I find that Internet telephony (such as with Net2Phone and e-Phone) is a good way to keep in touch with friends and relatives. I wish I had more time for browsing the Akihabara computer superstore area (two stops from Tokyo station), for travel (Osaka castle, and its surrounding parks and gardens, is worth a visit), going to hot springs like Arima Onsen (near Sannomiya, Kobe), hiking (Mitake-san near Tokyo, and Oze near Nikko, are favorites), visiting mountain temples like Yamadera (near Yamagata) and Sanzen-In (above Ohara, near Kyoto), listening to jazz standards (like when Hayasaka-san (sax) and Kuroda-san (piano) play together), chorus group concerts, Alistair Cooke's "Letter from America" BBC broadcasts in Real Audio, digital photography and digital image processing, and reading. I recommend the following:
.

I passed CISCO CCNA (1.0) in August '99, CCDA (1.0) in April 2000, and the Microsoft Windows 2000 Prof. exam. in July 2000. I have also completed CISCO CCNP 1.0 and CCDP 1.0 (three common exams. plus one CCNP/CCDP specific; passed the three common exams. — Routing, Switching, and Remote Access — in Oct. and Nov. 2000, completed CCNP and CCDP respectively by passing Support in Jan. and Internetwork Design in Mar. 2001). I passed the Microsoft Windows XP Pro. exam in May 2003, the Windows 2000 Server and Managing a Windows 2000 Network exams in June 2003 to complete Microsoft MCSA; next may do CISCO CCDA 2.0, Oracle 9i DBA or Microsoft MCDBA SQL exams. I'm currently studying CSS, and LINUX security, and testing SoftMac 2000, VMware Workstation, RedHat Enterprise LINUX 4, SuSE LINUX Professional 10 J, and PHP / MySQL running on Apache.
