"Hana-Oke Katsugi", January 25
For celebration of growing girls who reach 7 years old, the girls are dressed with decorated beautiful KIMONO. They shoulder two straw buckets filled with artificial flowers to lead pageants to a shrine at night.
Girls "Kagura", April 15,16
Many dances are dedicated in front of a god in "Chikata Jinja" shrine. Girls dances are also served. In one dance, girls of 8-9 years old wear maiden cloths with red "Hakama" (like pantaloons), red "Koromo" (like jacket or shirt), white half transparent "Usuginu" (like robe) and crowns. Five of them dance together using rings. The girls of this area desire to wear such cloths to dedicate the dance.
Cherry Blossoms, Early April
There are many cherry trees everywhere in Oyama. Spring festivals (Cherry blossoms -fest) are held in this season in a few places. The photograph in the left is special cherry blossoms named as "OMOI-GAWA SAKURA" found around OMOI River in Oyama. Each flower has approximately 10 petals with light pink color.
"Dragon-Fest", May 5
For praying good weather suitable for plant, many dragons are prepared by local communities around "Mamada Hachiman" shrine. The dragons are made of bamboos, straws, vines and green leaves. Each dragon from a community is first carried into a pond in the shrine. Then the dragon is carried to the Mamada central town for demonstration.
Ayu Fishing, June
Since Oyama City is surrounded by many rivers, fishing is popular. Many people from outside of Oyama as well as Oyama citizens fish "Ayu" (Japanese river trout) on OMOI River, Kinu River & etc. "Ayu" fishing is allowed seasonally.
Summer Festivals, July
Two festivals are held in this month.
One is "Oyama Gion Festival" on the 3rd weekend. People in central Oyama communities join the pageants. The traffic on old Route 4 is blocked for the pageants.
Another is "Oyama Summer Festival" on the last weekend of July. Big fireworks are shown on the OMOI River.
