YAKUSHIMA ISLAND: Detaching of the Surface of the Sea

An attempt to create a water mirror by cutting the sea surface to a square shape, using the level differences in the tide.

It was planned as something to be paired with the giant mirror for “CLOCK: A Shaft of Light of 70 million years” (1990).

In the morning of April 1, we set up a 4㎡ pool between two poles pinned at high and low tides the day before.

However, the level of the tide did not rise enough, so a completely clearcut sea surface did not appear when the tide fell.

It was an experiment, but we confirmed that our plan is highly realizable.
