とんでもない頭の体操　つづき

　チーのはカオのより表が込み入っている。助けて！と、おとうにはいいたくない、絶対。おとうは「またやってんのか？」と笑い転げる。ふん！

　Ethan, Rachel, Enrico, and Serena are talented students who were chosen from their schools to participate in the Johns Hopkins Math Talent Search. The schools they represented were Lincoln, Kennedy, Roosevelt, and Jefferson. Their math teachers were Mrs. Mendoza, Mr. Wong, Mrs. Bellinger, and Ms. Stober. These teachers encouraged their students to eat a hearty breakfast before taking the tests. The students ate eggs, English muffins, sausages, and granola. The percentile ranks for this group of students were 99%, 96%, 95%, 91%. The students' last names were Silverman, Politi, Lambeck, and Nottmeir. Use the following clues to match the students with their schools, last names, ranking, teachers, and breakfasts.

　これを一通り読んだだけでも、頭が痛くなった。吐き気もする。まことに不健康な体操である。

1. Mrs. Silverman thanked her son's teacher because he had given him so much encouragement.
2. Mrs. Lambeck made sure her daughter had a hearty sausage breakfast as Mrs. Brellinger had recommended.
3. The girl from Lincoln finished ahead of Politi and Mrs., Brellinger's student but behind the boy who had granola.
4. Rachel ranked ahead of the Roosevelt student and the boy who ate eggs and behind Mr. Wong's student.
5. Mrs. Mendoza's student placed ahead of Mrs. Stober's student.
6. Enrico finished ahead of Lambeck.

　まず、表を見る。縦軸はファーストネーム、学校、朝食、先生、スコアである。横軸はラストネーム、学校、朝食、先生、スコアだ。これをうめていくとなると、やはり途中で混乱してしまう。表の情報量が多すぎるのだ。で、別の紙に整理することにした。ガキンチョが寝てから取り掛かろうとするとチーがやってきた。「気になって眠れない。」で、チーと一緒に考えることにした。おとうにガキンチョの前でもさんざん笑われたのだ。ここでみっともない真似はできない。緊張する。１を読んで少し明るい気持ちになる。これだけで、Silvermanが男の子で先生がMr. Wongだということが分かってしまうのだ。その後、少しでも可能性のある名前を自前の表に書き込んでいく。可能性のなくなったものを消していくと、最後にはちゃんと解けていた。「お母さん、すごい！」チーが飛びついた。母の面目躍如の瞬間である。

　翌朝おとうは言った。「かーちゃんのじゃ、あてにならないぞ。もう一回やり直した方がいいんじゃないか？」そう思うんだったら、今度からこーゆー問題は初めからおとうに回すことにしよう。ふん！
